2 A is for Ames Ames was established in 1864 to serve the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River. Cynthia Duff , an early Ames settler, was instrumental in helping to secure land for the railroad.

3 B is for Butter cow In 1957 Earl Frank Dutt of Illionis took over the sculpting duties. It weighs about 600 pounds.

4 C is for Corn Iowa leads the nation in ethanol prodution, creating nearly 30% of all ethanol. Iowa’s ethanol industry can produce more than 3.6 billion gallons.

5 D is for Des Moines Des Moines was founded in 1843 and incorporated as a city in Des Moines is situated at the junction.

6 E is for Eagles A bald eagle’s white head may make it look bald. But actually the name comes from an old English word, “ balde, “ meaning white. These graceful birds have been the national symbol of the United States since 1782.

7 F is for Farms Agriculture is more than cows and crops. Being a succe ssful farmer today requires knowledge of anvanced technology.

8 G is for Goldfinch The American Goldfinch is a small bird about 4.5 inches long much like the size of a sparrow. The American Goldfinch can be easily detected.

9 H is for Hogs The hogs were separated by their brand/mark and or breed and claimed by the farmers. As you can guess many were never recovered.

10 I is for Iowa Iowa became the 29th state on December 28, The estimated population of Iowa is 2,830,000.

11 J is for John Wayne He is a director. These are some movies he made “The quiet man”, and “The Searchers”.

12 K is for Knoxville Knoxville was settled in 1791 and established in The city knoxville was incoprated in 1815.

13 L is for Limestone Limestone sedimentary rock wholly or in large part composed of calcium carbonate. It is ordinarily white but may be colored by impurities.

14 M is for Mississippi The Mississippi River makes up the Eastern border of Iowa. You can fish, boat, and swim in the river.

15 N is for Neola Newton N. Minow(born: 1926), American attorney, former chairman of the Federal Communications Comission( ). Newton game dynamics a free physics engine for simulating rigid bodies.

16 O is for Oak Tree The largest oak tree of record is the Wye oak in the community of Wye Mills in Talbot County on Maryland’s eastern shore in the U.S.A. It’s our state tree.

17 P is for Pigs Pigs is one of Iowa’s main livestock. Iowa ranks 1st in the united states in pork production.

18 Q is for Quakers Quakers is the name most often used descrilbe the members of the Religious Socitey of Friends. The name quakers originates from the fact that early worshippers would quake with the spirit of god.

19 R is for Rivers Most of the world’s major cities are by banks of rivers. Rivers normaly contains fresh water.

20 S is for Snow When water freezes inside clouds, ice cyrstals. Snow by definition is “crystallized ice”.

21 T is for Train Before trains, most people kept time by rising and setting of the sun. With the introduction of railways.

22 U is for Underwood Underwood is known as Downsville. Underwood is located in Norwalk Township.

23 V is for Volleyball It was invented by William G. Morgan in Volleyball is the second most popular in the world today.

24 W is for Water Water is an essential resource for life and good health. A lack of water to meet daily needs is a reality today.

25 X is for X-rays The first dental x-rays were made in the same year they were discovered – Dave Cheney invented x-rays.

26 Y is for Young snapping turtle
Young snapping turtles can grow to about 18 to 20 inches. In adulthood snapping turtles can weigh about 45 pounds.

27 Z is for Zoo Brass ,an alloy of zinc and copper, has been used for more than 3,000 years. Zinc simulates the transport of vitamin A from the liver to the skin of a zoo animal.
