1 Iowa ABC book By: Luke Pearson

2 A is for Agriculture By : Luke Pearson Agriculture was developed at least 10,000 years ago. Agriculture is the cultivation of animals, plants, and fungi.

3 B IS FOR Black Hawk When Chief Black was very young, he became a brave. Black Hawk was a War Chief who led his Sauk tribe to War. Black Hawk went to prison for fighting for his land in Iowa. He refused to in give without a fight. By : Luke Pearson

4 C IS FOR CARDIFF GIANT By : Luke Pearson It was made of gypsum and found under ground. The Cardiff Giant was originaly called Iowa’s Larggest Son.

5 D IS FOR DES MOINES By : Luke Pearson Des Moines is Iowa’s state capital. It was founded where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers meet. This location was originally a Military outpost.

6 E IS FOR Eastern Goldfinch
By : Luke Pearson The Eastern Goldfinch is Iowa’s state bird. This was declared in 1933 by the Iowa Legislative. The scientific name of the American Goldfinch is Spines Trusties Triistia. The male Goldfinch has a bright yellow belly with black wings and tail.

7 F IS FOR Farming By : Luke Pearson Farming was once the chief way of life. Not many people farm for a living any more like when Iowa was first settled, but farming remains the most important occupation in the world.

8 G IS FOR Geode The geode is the official rock of Iowa. This was declared in Southeastern Iowa is one of state’s best geode collecting area. The geode is also the state rock of Oregon too. By : Luke Pearson

9 H IS FOR Herbert Hoover By : Luke Pearson Herbert Hoover was the only President from Iowa. He was America’s 31st President. He was the president throughout the years of 1929 – 1933.

10 I IS FOR Iowa state flag By : Luke Pearson When the United States entered World War I, it had no flag. Iowa was admitted as a state of the Union on December 28, The original flag design is on display in the Marion Country Courthouse. It was drawn in crayon.

11 J IS FOR Julien Dubuque By : Luke Pearson High on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River is a monument dedicated to Julien Dubuque. He was the first white man to make his home in Iowa. Julien talked the Indian Chiefs into working the tribe lead mines. Dubuque and his helpers built a mill to be run by horsepower and a furnace to melt the lead ore into lead bars.

12 K IS FOR Keokuk By : Luke Pearson Keokuk was a Sauk leader, and also a member of the Fox Clan. He was not a chief at birth, but rose to the command of his people. Keokuk and his mother were said to be half French.

13 L IS FOR Log Cabins By : Luke Pearson Log cabins were some of the first kinds of houses settlers in Iowa made. In order to make a log cabin you need to have wood, straw, clay, mud ,and dirt.

14 M IS FOR Motto By : Luke Pearson Iowa’s state motto is “Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain.” The eagle that is on the Iowa state flag carries the motto.

15 N IS FOR Northern Red Oak
The Red Oak is the Iowa state tree. It is not the smallest tree in the world, and it isn’t the largest either. It is a medium-sized to large tree. Its acorns are very big. They are 3 to 4 inches large. By : Luke Pearson

16 O IS FOR Okeechobee Okeechobee is a huge lake in Iowa. One of Okeechobee’s many trails is the Scenic Trail. The trail is located right next to the Herbert Hoover Dike. Okeechobee is a very, very good fishing spot too. By : Luke Pearson

By : Luke Pearson Pottawattamie was created by Homer H. Field. It was created in It is exactly miles long.

18 Q IS FOR Quaker Oats Company
By : Luke Pearson The Quaker Oats Company, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is the largest cereal company in the world. The Quaker Oats Company goes back to 1901, when some American pioneers in oat milling came together to make a company under the name: The Quaker Oats Company.

19 R IS FOR Railroads By : Luke Pearson Railroads were very helpful to the early people, and to us now. Railroads could carry a lot of things. For example they could carry food, goods, gifts, and many, many more things. They also helped people get around faster too.

20 S IS FOR Sod Cabin When settlers could not find wood to make a log cabin, they made sod houses. They cut sod from thickly-rooted prairie grass which was all over the place. Prairie grass had thick, tough roots. In order to make a sod house you need to have mud, timber, grass, a grasshopper plow, and a horse or an ox. By : Luke Pearson

21 T IS FOR Thomas Edison By : Luke Pearson Thomas Edison lost his hearing around the age of 12 years old. Thomas Edison was a very smart and inventive man. He worked with both electricity and chemistry. One of his best known inventions is the electric indoor light bulb.

22 U IS FOR The University of Iowa
By : Luke Pearson The University of Iowa was founded on February 25, It was Iowa's first public institution of higher learning. It was the first U.S. public university to admit men and women on an equal basis when its doors opened to students.

23 V IS FOR James Van Allen By : Luke Pearson
James Van Allen was born in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. His work with astronomy and space science were important to NASA. James Van Allen studied many things with the exploration of space . He discovered that the earth is surrounded by radiation. The Van Allen Radiation Belt is named after him.

24 W IS FOR WILD ROSE The Wild Rose is the official state flower of Iowa. The Iowa Legislature decided this in 1897. The flower is pink with yellow in the center. By : Luke Pearson

25 X IS FOR The Saint Francis Xavier Basilica
By : Luke Pearson The Saint Francis Xavier Basilica is in Dyersville, Iowa. It is the only basilica in the United States located outside a major city.

26 Yellow River State Park
Y IS FOR Yellow River State Park By : Luke Pearson Yellow River State Forest is located in Allamakee County in northeast Iowa. Iowa's only fire tower is in Yellow River State Forest. The whole forest is open to hunting (except for campgrounds), hiking, and cross country skiing. The forest was established in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

27 Z IS FOR BLANK PARK ZOO By : Luke Pearson The biggest zoo in Iowa is the Blank Park Zoo. The Blank Park Zoo is in Des Moines, Iowa. It has been part of the Des Moines metro community since 1963. It is a 22 acre zoological park with more than 800 animals from five continents.
