History of the Mounted Patrol Started in 2000 as the result of an inaccessible crime scene Then – A volunteer unit was developed to provide remote law enforcement support, wilderness search & rescue, and evidence search. Today - The Mounted Patrol is still a volunteer organization, only much more capable. The Mounted patrol participates in missions activated by the Sheriff, including ongoing border security, warrant roundups, crime scene security, disaster response, and New Mexico State search and rescue missions.

The Mounted Patrol is rich in experience. Among the members are: 1 Retired Career Law Enforcement - Reserve Officers 5 Mounted Patrol Limited Law Enforcement Officers 14 Non-Law Enforcement SAR Members 17 certified SAR ICS100 or higher 1 licensed HAM radio operators

Horse Squad The oldest part of the Mounted Patrol, 4 horseman make up the horse squad. Dedication and superior training provide the man and horse muscle for service to the Sheriff and the citizens of Dona Ana County.

ATV Squad Certified ATV operators trained for extended missions and navigation of unmapped areas of Dona Ana County

Equipped With: 8 four wheel ATV’s – fully transportable 1 Ford 4wd Expedition 1 Chevrolet S-10 pickup 2 Single ATV/Utility trailers

Training In addition to Law Enforcement training, all members train in land navigation, map reading, GPS, and terrain familiarization exercises which allows teams to gain working knowledge of the wilderness areas in and around Dona Ana County.
