Outline Literature Review Research Objectives

Reviewing of Literature A review of previous documents to similar or related phenomena is essential even for beginning researchers. If the researcher is aware of earlier studies of his topic or related topics, he will be in much better position to asses the significance of his own work.

Reviewing of Literature Importance / Necessity: It prevents researcher from duplicating work that has done before. It prevents blind search. It helps to find out what others have learned and reported on the problem.

Reviewing of Literature Importance / Necessity: It should provide with convincing argument for why the particular research topic is needed. It helps researcher to become familiar with the various type of methodology that followed by others.

Research Objectives The research objectives address the purpose of the investigation and types of knowledge to be generated. While formulating the research objectives, we should keep in mind that the result would be compared to the objectives when the study is evaluated. Objectives should be closely related to the statement of the research problem, giving the sponsor specific and achievable goals.

Types of research objectives There are two types of research objectives. They are General Objective or Main objective Specific Objective

General objective The general objective of a study states what is expected to be achieved by the study in general terms. For example 1, “Socio-Economic conditions of female garment workers in Dhaka city”- an empirical study, the general objective of this study is To assess the socio-economic conditions of the female workers employed in garment sector in Dhaka city.

General objective Example 2 In a study to examine the contribution of goat farming in poverty alleviation in rural Bangladesh, the general objective may formed as follows: To asses the impact of investment in goat farming for poverty alleviation in rural Bangladesh.

General objective Example 3 Employee participation in decision making in RMG sector of Bangladesh, the main objective of this study is: To investigate the workers participation in decision making of Bangladesh.

Specific objective After setting the general objective, it is advisable to break it down into several smaller, logically connected parts. These are normally referred to as specific objectives. If we formulated properly, specific objectives will facilitate the development of the research methodology and will help the researcher to collection, analysis and interpretation of data.

Specific objective For example “Socio-Economic conditions of female garment workers in Dhaka city”, the specific objectives are as follows: To identify the factors that affects the socio-economic conditions of the female garment workers. To assess the social conditions as well as economic position of the female garment workers in our society. To recommend measures to be taken for improving the socio-economic conditions of female garment workers.

Specific objective For example 2, The specific objectives of that study are as follows: To asses the viability of investment in small-scale household goat farming. To estimate the contribution of small-scale household income and generating self-employment for women

Specific objective For example 3, The specific objectives of that study are as follows: To assess the present situation of the workers participation in decision making and motivation system To identify the causes of poor participation in decision making. To identify the nature and types of participation in decision

Research Proposal A research proposal is an individual’s or research firm’s formal offer to produce a product or render a service to a client or sponsor. A proposal is also known as a work plan, prospectus, outline and statement of intent. It is an agreement between a client and a researcher. It tells us what, how, where and to whom it will be done.

External proposals are two types: Type of Proposal Internal proposal External proposal External proposals are two types: 1. Solicited proposal 2. Unsolicited proposal

Format of a Research Proposal The proposal abstract Statement of research problem Formulation of objectives & hypotheses Literature review Benefits of the study Research methodology

Format of a Research Proposal 7. Plan for data collection 8. Plan for data processing and analysis 9. Work plan/ Time schedule 10. Budget 11. Limitations and 12. Appendix

Reviewing of Literature Importance / Necessity: It prevents researcher from duplicating work that has done before. It prevents blind research. It helps to find out what others have learned and reported on the problem researcher want to study.

Reviewing of Literature cont’d… It should provide with convincing argument for why the particular research topic is needed. It helps to become more familiar with the various type of methodology that might be used in the study.
