Content Content Area: Science Grade Level: 3rd Summary: The purpose of this activity is to give the students an opportunity to learn about the five oceans through an interactive activity. Standard: GLE 0307.7.1 Use information and illustrations to identify the earth’s major landforms and water bodies. Learning Objective: Given facts about the five oceans, the students will be able to answer questions about the material with 100% accuracy.

Ocean Facts! Did you know that there are five oceans on Earth? The five oceans are called the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Southern Ocean. These oceans cover more than 71% of the Earth’s surface and are the largest bodies of water in the world! The largest oceans are the Pacific, Atlantic, and the Indian Oceans.

The Pacific Ocean The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean in the world. It covers more than 30% of the Earth’s surface The deepest part of the Pacific Ocean reaches a depth of 35,827 feet.

The Atlantic Ocean The Atlantic Ocean is between the continents of Europe, the Americas, and Africa The Mid-Atlantic Ridge spreads beneath the Atlantic and is the longest Mountain Range on Earth! The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean on Earth!

The Indian Ocean The Indian Ocean is located between Africa and Asia. This ocean provides the largest breeding ground for the Humpback Whales! The Indian Ocean is an important transport route for Middle Eastern countries.

The Arctic Ocean The Arctic Ocean is located around the North Pole. The ice that covers this ocean shrinks 8% every ten years! This ocean is also home to the Lion’s Mane Jellyfish and Polar Bears!

The Southern Ocean The Southern Ocean is located around the South Pole. The Emperor Penguins call this ocean their home!
