3 Learning Objectives At the end of this module you will be able to: Locate the seven continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica Locate the five oceans: Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Southern Ocean

7 North America HOME The only continent that has every kind of climate The third largest continent The fourth largest continent in population Major Animals of North America: Brown Bears, Bald Eagles, Hummingbirds, and Bullfrogs

8 South America The home of Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world The home of the Amazon River, the largest river in the world (by volume of water) Major language spoke: Spanish and Portuguese Major Animals of South America: Anaconda HOME

9 Europe The only continent without any deserts The Vatican City, the world’s smallest country, is in Europe There are more than 200 different languages spoken in Europe. Major Animals of Europe: European Tree Frogs, Wild Boars, Hedge Hog, and Roe Deer HOME

10 Asia The largest continent Covers 1/3 of Earth’s surface Half of the world’s population lives in Asia The home of Mount Everest, the high mountain in the world Major Animals of Asia: Pythons, Tigers, Panda, Yaks, and India Rhinoceroses HOME

11 Africa The second largest continent The home of the Nile River, the longest river in the world The home of the Sahara Desert, the largest desert in the world Major Animals of Africa: Elephant, Lion, Cheetah, Zebra, and Giraffe HOME

12 Australia The largest island The smallest continent in the world 2/3 of Australia is a flat desert The home of the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef in the world Major Animals of Australia: Kangaroo, Koala, Platypus, and Emu HOME

13 Antarctica A frozen land area around the South Pole Is the highest, driest, windiest, emptiest, coldest place on Earth During the winter period it is dark all the time During the summer period it is light all the time Major Animals of Antarctica: Penguins HOME

14 Pacific Ocean The deepest of all the oceans The largest of all the oceans Is approximately 1/3 of the Earth’s Surface The home of the Marianas Trench, the deepest point in the world Home of the Great Barrier Reef, the longest reef in the world HOME

15 Atlantic Ocean The youngest among all the oceans and is still widening Is located between North America and Europe One of the busiest sea routes in the Western and Eastern Hemispheres Has one of the largest coastlines The world’s saltiest ocean HOME

16 Arctic Ocean The smallest and shallowest ocean in the world The coldest of all the oceans The North Pole is situated in the middle of the Arctic Ocean During winter time the Arctic Ocean is almost completely covered in sea ice HOME

17 Indian Ocean The warmest ocean in the world Has less marine animal life due to its higher water temperature Monsoons occur in the Indian Ocean Scientists claim that the Indian Ocean is getting 20 cm wider every year HOME

18 Southern Ocean Located around the South Pole Was created the fifth ocean of the world in 2000 The home of Emperor Penguins and Wandering Albatrosses HOME
