Assassination Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary announced he would visit Sarajevo, Bosnia Bosnia: – under control of Austria-Hungary Empire – had many Slavs and Serbs Serbian nationalists angered  viewed Austrians as foreign oppressors Terrorist group the Black Hand vowed to take action Archduke ignored warnings June 28, 1914 he and his wife, Sofie, rode through the capital in an open car  both were shot and killed Conspirator named Gavrilo Princip

Austria Strikes Back Austria reluctant to go to war  sent Serbia an ultimatum To avoid war: 1.Serbia must end all anti-Austrian agitation 2.Punish any Serbian official involved in the murder plot. 3.Must let Austria join the investigation Serbia agreed to most but not all  gave Austria the opportunity to declare war July 28, 1914 Austria declared war on Serbia
