World War I Causes & “The Spark”

Identify the members of the Triple Entente, Triple Alliance, Allied Powers, and Central Powers during WWI. Identify the location of major events and countries during WWI on a map. Archduke Franz Ferdinand & Family YouTube - The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

The Assassination: Sarajevo, Bosnia June 1914 The Assassination: Sarajevo, Bosnia June 1914

The Assassin Gavrilo Princip Gavrilo Princip

Who’s To Blame?

Love Triangle Austria liked Bosnia and wanted him to be her boyfriend. Serbia also liked Bosnia. Serbia and Bosnia were old friends – they had a lot in common and he lived right next door! Serbia decided to get Austria out of the way by spreading rumors and starting trouble. Then, Serbia would have Bosnia all to herself. Austria got really mad and told Serbia to stop causing trouble or else! Serbia did not tell Austria what she wanted to hear. So, Austria declared war on Serbia! Then, the rest of the school got involved. It turned into a big mess!!

Replace the words in your story with: him = it her boyfriend = part of its empire he lived = it was spreading rumors = assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand herself = itself told Serbia = issued the Austrian Ultimatum she = it the school = Europe got involved = picked sides mess = war

The “Great War” Austria declared war on Serbia … and Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary…then Germany and France got involved …and then Great Britain entered the war when Germany tried to invade France… Like a snowball rolling downhill, European alliances dragged most of the continent into “the Great War”

Alliance During WWI Allied Powers Central Powers Great Britain France Russia Italy Austria-Hungary Germany Ottoman Empire

1914 Map Use the maps on pages 365 & 368 to label your map.

The Major Players: Nicholas II [Russia] George V [Britain] Pres. Poincare [France] Allied Powers Franz Josef [Austria-Hungary] Wilhelm II [Germany] Victor Emmanuel II [Italy] Central Powers Enver Pasha [Turkey]

1914 Map 1. Russia (A) [Tsar Nicholas II] 2. Ottoman Empire (C) [Enver Pasha] 3. Austria-Hungary (C) [Franz Joseph] 4. Germany (C) [Wilhelm II] 5. France (A) [Poincare] 6. Great Britain (A) [George V] 7. Serbia 8. Sarajevo, Bosnia (Franz Ferdinand was assassinated) 9. Western Front--trench lines A = Allies C = Central Powers

Players of WWI Using your book, look up information about the major players of WWI. For each, give a brief description and explain WHY they were important.

Journal Assignment # 1 Write a journal as if you are an 18 year old male in Germany, Russia or France reacting to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and the Austrian ultimatum. What does this mean for your COUNTRY? What will YOU do next? How do YOU feel?
