Causes of the American Revolution French and Indian War Proclamation Of 1763 No Taxation without Representation Sugar Act Stamp Act Townshend Act Quartering Act Boston Massacre Tea Act Boston Tea Party Intolerable Act 1st Continental Congress Lexington and Concord

French and Indian war Because England fought this war to help protect the colonies England went into debt (to owe money)

No Taxation Without Representation The colonists were being taxed by the King and Parliament without any say or input into The decisions being made! John Hancock John Adams Sam Adams

Sugar Act This act taxed sugar, molasses and coffee Tax

“No Taxation without Representation” The colonists were upset because they had now say in how the colonies were being run! They came up with a catch phrase or slogan. This catch phrase or slogan was: “No Taxation without Representation”

Stamp Act Hear Ye, Hear Ye This taxed legal documents, newspapers, printed materials, playing cards, and dice

Declaratory Act This was a statement of power. It said that England had the power to tax the colonies whenever they wanted!

I.E.- lead, paint, paper, and glass Townshend Act This act taxed items needed for every day life in the colonies NOT made in the colonies. I.E.- lead, paint, paper, and glass

Quartering Act This act said that the colonists had to provide housing, candles bedding, and beverages for the British soldiers.

Boston Massacre Five colonists were killed here. An African American sailor, Crispus Attucks, was one of the five civilians killed here!

Tea Act This act taxed tea, but more importantly, formed a monopoly for the British East India Company Monopoly- To control all the sales of a certain product

Boston Tea Party Colonists dressed up as Mohawk Indians and threw crates of tea into the Boston Harbor in retaliation for the Tea Act. They were led by Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty!

Intolerable Act England blockaded and closed the port of Boston until the colonists paid for the tea that they threw into the Harbor. They did this in retaliation for the Boston Tea Party.

Lexington A small village outside of Boston. The first shots of the Revolution were fired there. This is where 8 colonists were killed on the “Green”. No British soldiers were killed here.
