Mrs Zelinka Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator for English English

There are seven lessons per fortnight. The year group is divided into ‘X’ and ‘Y’ halves and students are grouped into three sets in each half. Pupils are given a homework task each week; either reading or writing. There are key assessments each half term; this work is assessed and reported to parents via the quarterly reporting system. Pupils must also have a reading book for every English lesson. English – Year 7 Overview

‘Matilda’ - Roald Dahl We study Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda’ considering family relationships and school life. Pupils write a script to depict family life or pupil/teacher talk. Autumn Term

Media and Fairy Tales We then move on to media and fairy tales in our analysis of the film ‘Shrek’. Autumn Term

Autobiographical Writing We begin with an autobiographical writing unit, using Roald Dahl’s ‘Boy’ as our source material. Pupils write their own autobiography as an 80 year old. Spring Term

‘The Tempest’ - William Shakespeare Pupils study the roles of characters and the language they use to show their status. Students create an alternative scene where power roles are reversed. Spring Term

An Introduction to Poetry Pupils study a selection of poems analysing the use of language techniques and their impact on the reader. Summer Term

Speaking and Listening Individual Contribution Pupils prepare and deliver a speech on a topic of their choice, demonstrating their ability to speak fluently, engaging their listeners through varied vocabulary and expression. Summer Term

Written homework is set according to the pupil’s homework timetable Sometimes homework will be given by the teacher, sometimes it will be set on Moodle If pupils have difficulty completing their homework, they MUST see their teacher before the deadline Homework

English resources are organised by topic on Moodle. Pupils will be able to access homework tasks, lesson resources and suggested wider reading materials from home. Our LRC (Learning Resource Centre) has a page on Moodle. Here you can find recommended reads and information about upcoming events such as the Spelling Bee competition. Moodle

Provide a quiet work area for your child to complete all homework. Have a supply of stationery that your child may require: pens, pencils, a ruler, a dictionary etc. Revision guides will be available from the LRC for all subjects. How can you help your child?

Ensure your child has a reading book for school and encourage them to read at home. All pupils MUST have a reading book for all English lessons. Use Moodle to find out their next topics and encourage your child to work independently to research and carry out wider reading to strengthen their understanding in the classroom. How can you help your child?
