OBJ: Given notes SWBAT construct a college-style lab report with 70% accuracy. DN: Take out note paper ACT: Introduction- How do we construct a lab report about measuring mass and volume? HW: Return iPad contract signed by parent & you (due tomorrow). Work on review sheets, Lab Skills Exam, 9/24; Matter Exam, 9/30.

LAB REPORT Problem: State a question to be solved. Hypothesis: educated guess Materials: equipment used Procedure: Steps taken to solve problem. Experiment: data table, graph Results/Conclusion: What did you learn/discover? See data table, graph Abstract/Summary: Briefly explain... –Why was lab done? –State steps/experiments done. –What did you find/learn/discover? (Be specific)

MASS & VOLUME LAB REPORT Problem: How do we find the mass and volume of different objects? Hypothesis: Mass is found by using the balance; volume is found using a ruler (cube; V=LxWxH) or graduated cylinder (irregular solids). Materials: grad. Cylinder, ruler, balance, cork, pebble, metal bar, water.

PROCEDURE Calibrate balance Measure mass of each object using balance and record results on chart. Objects measured are bar, pebble, and cork. MASS BAR g PEBBLE g CORK g

PROCEDURE Measure volume of cork, then pebble using grad. cylinder and water displacement method. Measure volume of bar using ruler and the formula V = length x width x height. Record volume results on chart. VOLUME BAR cm 3 PEBBLE mL CORK mL

RESULTS: The following masses were measured using the balance MASS BAR g PEBBLE g CORK g

RESULTS: The following volumes were measured using the ruler (bar) and grad. cylinder (pebble, cork): VOLUME BAR cm 3 PEBBLE mL CORK mL

ABSTRACT FORM State three science concepts that you learned based on this lab: WRONG STATEMENTS 1. I learned about mass and how to calculate mass. 2. I learned about volume and how to find volume. 3. I learned about density and how to calculate density. CORRECT STATEMENTS: 1. I learned that mass is the amount of matter (atoms) in a substance and it is measured using a balance (unit: grams). 2. I learned that volume is the space an object occupies and for cubic/ rectangular solids we use a ruler where V = LxWxH; for irregular objects (cork, pebble) we use a graduated cylinder (water displacement method) to find volume. 3. I learned that density is the amount of mass divided by the amount of volume; it represents the internal atomic arrangement of atoms in a substance
