1 Density What is density?

2 Warm - up Update your Table of Contents
TEST REVIEW - List the steps explaining how to do displacement. There should be four steps an they need to be written in complete sentences. Measurement Scale – p 21 Safety Test – Attached to page 29, percent graphed and reflection. What did you do to study?

3 What is Density? Vocabulary – p.31
Mass – The amount of matter in an object. Volume – The amount of space taken up by some matter. Density – The mass of a known volume of substance. It is usually measured in g/cm3 Immiscible – A term used to describe liquids that are unable to dissolve in one another. Miscible – A term used to describe liquids that are able to dissolve in one another.

4 How is density calculated?
Step 1 – Using a triple beam balance, find the mass of your object. Mass is measured in grams. Step 2 – Use a graduated cylinder if the object is a liquid, a ruler if your object is a regular solid, or water displacement if the object is an irregular solid to find volume. Volume is measured in mL or cm3, depending on it’s state (solid or liquid). 1mL = 1 cm3. Step 3 – Density is calculated by dividing your mass measurement by your volume measurement or Density = Mass/Volume. Density is labeled g/cm3 ,or how much matter is in each cubic cm of an object.

5 Calculating Density Find the density of 50 mL of water.
Find the density of the following blocks: white plastic and aluminum

6 Density Practice Problems Show ALL Work and Include UNITS Page 32
A piece of metal has a mass of 45 grams and a volume of 110 cm3 . What is its density? A piece of metal has a mass of 46 g and a volume of 4 mL. What is its density?
