1 Mass, Volume & Density SPS2a. Calculate density when given a means to determine a substance’s mass and volume.

2 Think About It… Would you rather kick a bowling ball or a soccer ball?
Would you rather carry around a kilogram of feathers or a kilogram of lead? Explain.

3 I. Vocabulary Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space
Examples: Non-Examples: Volume – the amount of space taken up by an object Liquid Measure with a graduated cylinder Measure at bottom of meniscus Base unit: liter (L)

4 Comparing volume: 1 mL = 1 cm3
Solid Measure with a ruler V = length x width x height Base unit: cubic meter (m3) Gas Gases expand to fill their container Volume of gas = volume of container Comparing volume: 1 mL = 1 cm3 Irregular objects: use water displacement Volume of Object = Final Volume – Initial Volume Volume of Object = 265 mL – 200 mL = 65 mL (or 65 cm3)

5 Mass – amount of matter an object contains
Measure with a triple beam balance Not the same as weight Base unit = grams Density – amount of matter in a given space

6 II. Practice Problems A metal ball has a mass of 2 kg and a volume of 6 m3. What is its density? Water has a density of 1 g/mL. What is the mass of the water if it fills a 10 mL container?

7 A certain gas expands to fill a 3 liter container
A certain gas expands to fill a 3 liter container. Its mass is measured to be 0.6 kg. What is its denisty? A solid is 5 cm tall, 3 cm wide and 2 cm thick. It has a mass of 129 g. What is its density?

8 What is the volume of a marble that has a mass of 3 g and a density of 2.7 g/mL?
A graduated cylinder is filled to an initial volume of mL. A rock is dropped into the graduated cylinder. The final volume of the graduated cylinder is 18.2 mL. What is the rock’s volume in both mL and cm3? What method was used to determine this?
