P ride A ttitude S portsmanship S cholarship Our Goal The goal is to have all student-athletes work to embody these characteristics.

Think You should take great pride in the fact you are a student-athlete.?Pride

You are seen as a student-athlete whether you are wearing your uniform, on the field or off.

Think Why does it matter how you act on and off the court/field?Pride

Remember Integrity is doing what’s right, even when nobody is watching -Jim Stovall Meaning that some one is always watching what you do. Pride Kids Future Athletes Parents/Friends

Some of the most visible athletes are not the best role modelsPride

Make sure you remember YOU are some of the most visible members of our school communityPride

ON YOUR SHEET Complete the scruples checklist

Attitude How do you interact with officials ? How about your coaches? Opponents? In support of the team(cheering) While you’re playing? When you’re watching? Does how you treat the game officials matter? Why do fans often behave the worst?

Reacting to a Bad Call Officials are people too They can make mistakes You may not agree How you handle it matters A ttitude

Take a P.A.S.S. Maintain Self Control Keep your Cool Think TEAM, not ME (flagrant unsportsmanlike fouls disqualify you from the next contest; hurts the team ) Walk Away

Door Prize

On Your Sheet Define Sportsmanship Probably easier to define bad sportsmanship

Bad Examples of Sportsmanship- Easy Good Examples of Sportsmanship- HardSportsmanship Why do you play sports? Remember that how you a play/cheer is a reflection of who YOU are. But how you play/cheer is also a reflection of who WE are.

Think about how sportsmanship matters

Good/Bad Examples Should it be part of the game? What happens afterwards? Should you ever “Get in someone’s face”Sportsmanship

How to handle trash talking Take a P.A.S.S. Ignore it Make Coach/Referee aware Play Harder Rise above it Responding makes it worse (especially with fans)Sportsmanship

Good Sportsmanship Matters!Sportsmanship

Result of Trash Talking?Sportsmanship Anger Fights Bad experience Hurts the school’s reputation

Easy to Find Poor Sportsmanship Hard to Find Good SportsmanshipSportsmanship

1. Positive school yells and cheers in a respectful manner. 2. Encouraging those fans around you to join in displaying sportsmanlike conduct. 3. Applaud during the introduction of players, coaches and officials and at the end of a contest for all performances from all participants. 4. Respectfully responding to decision of officials. 5. Shaking hands with all participants and coaches at the end of the contest, regardless of the outcome. You Should:

1. Booing or heckling an official, coach, player or cheerleader. 2. Blaming the loss of a game on officials, coaches and participants. 3. Using profanity or displaying anger that draws attention away from the game. 4. Yelling in a disrespectful manner or to antagonize opponents or officials. 5. Refusing to shake hands or give recognition for good performances. You Should Not:

ON YOUR SHEET Complete the Team/Individual checklists

Door Prize

Scholarship Student-Athletes at Albemarle have it tougher than most. Why? You are still required to maintain your studies. Do you think grades would on average go up or down during an athletes season? A Scholarship?

Scholarship It’s tough to balance it all but your schoolwork must come first. You’ve got to get your work done and there’s not enough time to do it. FIND TIME! On average athletes perform better academically, why?

Plan ahead Study on the bus (on the way to contests) Make time to study Never use practice or game as an excuse! Talk to older players about how they manage it Get help during LEAP It’s Student-Athlete, Not Athlete-Student! Scholarship

Our Goal Uphold these ideals!!! P ride A ttitude S portsmanship S cholarship

Good Role Models

THANKS! Have a great season!!!
