Mary Boushra

For my media studies course I was asked to produce a music magazine, but only the front cover, contents page and double page spread. The genre of my music magazine will is Hip-Hop and R&B, I chose this music genre because it relates to me allot and they are the main music genre’s I listen to. My demographic will be for young females between the ages of 15-24, my music magazine will feature latest news, gossip and interviews. Hip-Hop and R&B are loosing allot of attention, particularly R&B, it used to be extremely popular in the 1990’s but now pop and punk rock is taking over this scene. I put a bar code on my magazine cover, the month it is issued and also the price of the music magazine.

The artist is very close to my target market, because she looks very ‘hip’ and she looks like she is really into style and fashion, this will most defiantly relate to my target audience. My masthead is means music is my life, but I abbreviated it to MIML because I think it is very catchy and it will ring bells. I used a pink background in order to show some femininity and the black jacket represents confidence Analysis..

My magazine relates to young women, because the featured article is about love, girls saying ‘I love you’ too quickly and falling for the wrong type of guys and getting their hearts crushed. This is a very serious issue which has to be mentioned and taught to younger women, because they are the future. My artist on the front cover is a new fresh face to the Hip-Hop industry. She is wearing a black furry jumper to show confidence, because black is such a dominant confident colour and it will show her independence very well.

Hip-Hop and R&B are not a secluded market, it is really worldwide, there is hip-hop and R&B in every country. However the English- American relationship is close and the music scene is also slimming down its relation. I would like my music magazine MIML to be sold at most music stores such as HMV. I believe it will get more reception at stores such as Whsmith because allot of people between the ages I am aiming my magazine at go and visit stores like that, also at local newsagents and off licence’s.

What type of music do you listen to? How often do you normally buy music magazines? Here are four main questions I asked my target market because this is what will really help me assemble my final front cover, contents page and double page spread.

 My target audience are women, aged between 15 and 24, this is because Hip-Hop and R&B is very popular between them ages, but not necessarily for women but also males.

 I used big bright bold colours for my front cover and especially my contents page, my double page spread was very simple, with a black background and red text, this is because red can symbolise either love or anger and pain, and in this case the title of my double page spread has “i love u” in it and red is used to show that, but when you read the article my artist ‘Sammy k’ exposes her past which is very heart-breaking.

 I have learnt how to photograph really well, I have learnt that natural lighting is always the best because it looks much more professional that the over the top photographs, simple is much more.  I found out that in order to make a magazine cover you do not have to use photo shop, because I used Microsoft Publisher and it turned out very well.

There is a major difference between what I produced at the beginning of the year and now towards the end of the year, I have learnt so much about photography, mise-en-scene, editing, photo shopping etc.
