Aims & Objectives To develop our understanding of the benefits and e-safety risks of using ICT To think about the role we can all play in reducing ‘e-risky’ behaviour by children To look further at the cyber bullying and also ‘stranger danger’. You will not be able to remember everything so will ‘signpost’ to some great resources at the end.

What is the ‘ICT’ ? All systems of electronic communications 93% of all children have their own PC 8 is the average age for a child to have their first mobile phone Over 1.4 million children own their own webspace (and growing by the day!) If ICT is all forms of electronic communication, what sort of access do pupils have to ICT?

How do Children use ICT? School Work – Research & Presenting Info Entertainment –YouTube, iPlayer, Music, Games Social Life –Facebook, Bebo, email, etc. Often on their mobiles? There are many other ways in which children use ICT, but these are the three main categories. Guess??

What are positive aspects of ICT in the lives of young people? Pupils can access endless information for research purposes using the web. Pupils can communicate more efficiently with you, family and friends. It is quicker and information can be shared much easier. Pupils can present information more professionally. Pupils can find entertainment (music, video, gaming) easily and often cheaper online. There are many other positives of using ICT, such as 24/7 access, cheaper audio visual…but this is the main benefits to children

Negatives Can endlessly be spending time on MSN. Finding inaccurate information on the web. Cyber bullying threat. Inappropriate Material. Children can become inactive, spending too much time using ICT. Disclosing too much information online. ‘Stranger Danger’. Older children/adults have access to young children with anonymity in the virtual world. There are the standard risks of using ICT such as viruses/scam emails/identity theft/fraud and so on, but I imagine these are the main concrens

Focus 1 – Cyber bullying Video Introduction

Focus 1 – Cyber bullying Some ‘classic’ forms of Cyber Bullying…..…anonymity behind text messages, email and chat. Some ‘classic’ victim behaviour-hiding it from parents and teachers, thinking it will just go away.

Forms of Cyber bullying Threats – Direct, but online for all to see? Hacking – into accounts? Name calling – Again for all to see? Harassment – Malicious text messages sent? Exclusion – Setting up groups, not inviting? Public postings – Status updates on facebook?

Distinctive Features There can be a mass audience ‘watching’ the victim suffer There is a perception of anonymity The traditional profile of ‘bully’ has changed, there are no age or size dynamics now - a bully doesn't have to be the biggest! Evidence can be good so it needs to be kept, not deleted.

Advice for all users of ICT…. Respect others Think before you send Treat your password with the tightest security….don’t give it out to anybody. Use tools if necessary - block & ‘unfriend’ Do not retaliate Save the evidence - don't delete it Cyber bully

Focus 2 – Stranger Danger Video Introduction

Stranger Danger Predators can hide behind one of the 100’s of different ‘profiles’ that they have stored. ‘Strangers’ often are ‘added’ as friends through being friends of friends. Pupils see someone else they ‘kinda’ know is there friend, and so think it is okay to accept their friends request. Children are often very trusting and naïve and will post personal information on their status/profile….which is unlikely to be ‘private’

Advice for all users of ICT…. Don’t accept a ‘friends’ request from someone you do not know in real life. Never post any personal information (address, mobile number, school, etc) on your status/profile…anyone could have access to it! Obviously avoid ‘chatting’ to someone you do not know, predators can quickly strike up a friendship and gain trust. Be aware of what your child is doing when using ICT. Chat to them about it. Have the Laptop in the dining room? Stranger Danger

E-Safety Not about ‘banning’ children from using ICT as risks exist, but eSafety all about is learning about how your children use ICT and educating about the safe and appropriate use….so that they can make the most of this wonderful technology. Conclusion
