E-Safety  There are basic steps that can be taken to ensure your child’s e- safety.  You may want to discuss these with your child and there may be things that you want as “non-negotiables”

Key problems found in the home 1) PC in a “private” place 2) Social networking sites 3) Unsecured wireless networks 4) ISP child controls not active 5) No or ineffective anti virus/malware protection. 6) A culture of “don’t want to tell”

Worst case scenario What is the worst case scenario? (Discuss)

Profiles on social networking sites may not be secure. Do you know if your child has a social networking profile? One? More than one?

E-Safety The K.I.S.S principal. Keep It Safe and Simple Have simple, rules that the whole family follow. Revise them regularly, just as schools do.

Cyberbullying is... ‘the use, usually repeated over time, of information and communications technology (ICT), particularly mobile phones and the internet, with the aim of intentionally hurting and individual or group’ Brighton & Hove City Council, July 2008

How does it differ from other forms of bullying behaviour?  Attempts to remain anonymous  Profile of the bully and the target  Certain instances of cyberbullying are unintentional

Advice we can give to young people  Keep evidence of cyberbullying by saving messages and MSN conversations.  Don’t reply - never retaliate or reply if you’ve been sent a nasty message. Block it and report it to an adult you can trust.  Report It – Most websites and mobile phone operators have a place where you can report abuse or cyberbullying

Advice we give to young people  Always respect others – be careful what you say and what you send. Messages and images can be made public and could stay online forever.  Protect your online accounts and your mobile phone with a password – don’t share it with anyone!  Tell someone – Tell a teacher, an adult or a friends you can trust.

Finally….. Talking about e-safety in schools is great, talking about it in the home is better. Again, it is the principal of openness and regular review that prevents problems.
