Bell Ringer—Correct the mistakes in the passage. While fishing off the florida coast a tourist capsized his boat. Cuz of his fear of alligators he was afraid to swim ashore. Clinging to the overturned boat he saw a man standing on the shore. He yelled “are there any alligators around here” The man yelled back, “no they haven’t been around here for years.” Feeling safe the tourist started swimming calmly toward shore. About halfway there he yelled back at the man on shore. “how did you get rid of the alligators?” “We didn’t do anything,” the man called back. “the sharks got them all.”

Today we will… Use our grammar skills to correct faulty sentences. Increase our understanding of verbs and how verbs function in sentences. Learn 3 new Latin roots Chapter 2 of A Child Called “It” Write Costa’s Level Questions for Chapter 2.

Linking and Auxiliary Verbs Linking verbs are not action verbs. Linking verbs are connectors.  They connect the subject to the noun or adjective that describes it. The fans were eager for a win. (fans is the subject; eager describes the fans) Remember, linking verbs are like a pivot point. You only need ONE and you can flip the sentence—it should make some sense. She is pretty. Pretty is she.

Linking and Auxiliary Verbs Auxiliary verbs are not action verbs, but they need action verbs.. Auxiliary verbs are words in the verb phrase that are not the main verb. They must have left late.  What’s the main verb? (left—main verb / action verb)  must and have are auxiliary verbs. Linking verbs and auxiliary verbs will never be in the same sentence.

Let’s Practice Together…Linking or Auxiliary? The people were angry about the taxes. The people were going on vacation. She has been looking for her keys for an hour. She looks awesome! He would have been growing mushrooms. He grows weary.

Time to practice…Linking or Auxiliary? One of the boxes was completely empty. _____ I was emptying the boxes when Sara arrived. _____ The lemonade tastes sour. _____ Abby Grace has never tasted ice cream. _____ This poster is suitable for framing. _____ The construction team might have been framing the house. _____
