Perseverance Unit Opener By: Ms. E. Vides 2009

Perseverance Introduction Achievement and success is in your own hands and perseverance, or persistence, is an essential factor in achieving your hopes and dreams. Understand that value and satisfaction of staying with something, even though it may not be easy and the payoff may seem remote is very important. Extraordinary people who have accomplished goals are not the only people who persevere.

Activating Prior Perseverance Knowledge Consider your understanding of perseverance and when, where, why, and how we persevere. Consider a time when you persevered to accomplish a goal. Consider how challenges can be overcome by perseverance if it is used intelligently.

Unit 1 Read Aloud “Wilma Rudolph” Hard work and determination changed Wilma Rudolph’s life. As a child, she overcame double pneumonia, scarlet fever, and polio to regain the use of her left leg. To stay in college, Rudolph worked two hours a day, five days a week, in addition to training for the 1960 Olympic games. Rudolph was the first woman ever to win three gold medals in the Olympics and gave women’s track a strong boost in America. Rudolph paved the way for both male and female African-American athletes. The banquet and parade held in her honor were the first integrated events in her hometown of Clarksville, Tennessee. Wilma Rudolph became a legendary athlete and spokesperson for many organizations.
