 The start of the Civil War began at Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

 Between 46,000 and 51,000 Americans were casualties in the three-day battle.  It had the largest number of casualties of the Civil War. Gettysburg

 IT WAS THE BLOODIEST SINGLE-DAY BATTLE IN AMERICAN HISTORY, WITH ABOUT 23,000 CASUALTIES.  ANTIETAM IS CONSIDERED A TURNING POINT OF THE WAR AND A VICTORY FOR THE UNION BECAUSE IT ENDED LEE'S STRATEGIC CAMPAIGN AND IT ALLOWED PRESIDENT LINCOLN TO ISSUE THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION ON SEPTEMBER 22, WHICH TOOK EFFECT ON JANUARY 1, 1863.
