Math Is Not a 4 Letter Word (anymore) Redesigning ABE Math

 Why a redesign now?  Carnegie Learning Cognitive Tutor software  Structure of Math 50 course  Results  Collaborative lesson: Dewey Decimal System

Implement Best Practices Research Carnegie Report: Basic Skills for Complex Lives Basic Skills for Complex Lives Washington State Transition Math ProjectTransition Math Project Received FIPSE grant October 2009 Dissatisfied with outdated math curriculum Too skills based, not enough application or relevant content Poor student success rates from ABE Math through college math

For those students needing only  GED Math  Accuplacer Arithmetic

Math 50 Passed Accuplacer Arithmetic Prepared for GED Math Qualified for Math 90 Score 50 + on Accuplacer to go to Math 100 OR

◦ Blends collaborative and cooperative classroom instruction with ◦ Adaptive learning technology

Provides 4 feedback loops:  Feedback to students  Feedback to instructors  Feedback to course designers  Feedback to learning science researchers

Class organization  Lab-based and  Modularized  Contextualized content  Group work Marks  Pass/Fail

Lab hours required and tracked Assessment ongoing Mastery learning required Students progress at their own rate Collaborative group work required

 We asked students why they thought they made gains in math 50 this quarter.

 Excellent attendance, willingness to learn, committed instructors and tutors - competent& supportive, committed to doing homework, setting goals for success.  Took more time understanding the numbers, asked questions, did homework, review of entire work and the tutor help.  In class every day, doing class work online and doing homework.  Finding easier steps to solve problems, tutor helps a lot when I’m stuck, and gained Accuplacer 50 points.  Try my best, asked questions, studied with a group, was in class on time, looked at it visually, study a lot on it to get the point.  Class work is what made me better.  I have learned so much more in math then I knew before by being in this class and having a tutor.  Math used to be a 4 letter word to me. Not anymore.
