REMEDIAL MATH Everything you need to know about placing into NSC’s Foundational Math Program

What is this all about? Unique program designed to help students move into college level math and science courses as quickly as possible without sacrificing content and expectations. Material is broken down into smaller sections rather than lumped into a full 16 week semester

Goals of Remediation Equip students with the necessary arithmetic and algebra skills to succeed in college level math and science courses. Provide a solid intellectual foundation of mathematical reason that can be applied to any class Increase the level of self confidence in students when it comes to working with numbers and algebraic concepts

How it works… The structure of Foundational Math: The remedial classes are broken into 6 five-week modules. It’s easier for students to concentrate on one small block of information at a time Each module is pass/fail and you cannot proceed to the next one without passing the current one. At the end of each module, students are assigned new classrooms and instructors, depending on if they pass/fail. (time of the class will not change) Students take up to 3 modules per semester. Math 093Math 095Math 096 Module 1 Module 2 Module 3 Module 4 Module 5 Module 6

Enrolling for Classes and Grades You enroll in classes based on the module at the beginning of the semester. You will earn an A for the class when you complete the course. If you start in modules 1, 3 or 5, you must pass two modules during the semester. If you start in modules 2, 4, or 6, you must pass one module during the semester. If you fail to accomplish this during the semester, you will receive an F. Completed modules from past semesters carry forward into the new semester, regardless of your grade.

So…let’s see how it works Sample student A: So the work the student did in Module 3 – applies to Math 095 in the next semester. That student would start in Module 4! 8 How do I pass these classes? In order to pass a module, one of two standards must be met: STANDARD 1: 70% or better in each of the following categories: Attendance Homework Quiz Average (4) Module Exam STANDARD 2: 80% or better on the Module Exam Examples: AttendanceHomeworkQuizzesModule Exam Student A75% AttendanceHomeworkQuizzesModule Exam Student B50% 65%75% AttendanceHomeworkQuizzesModule Exam Student C0% 90%

Tips for Success GO TO CLASS!!! Do your homework Talk to your instructor Study the practice exams

So you’re in Foundational Math, now what?! “It doesn’t matter so much how you got here but what matters is what you do while you’re here.” Utilize all of your resources: Student Academic Center 1 on 1 tutoring Supplementary Instruction Sessions Math Labs Your Instructor Foundational Math Coordinator Other Students
