How TFD Works How TFD Works

TFDs Initiatives Understanding Deforestation Free Food, Fuel, Fiber and Forests REDD+ Benefit Sharing Genetically Modified Trees Free, Prior, and Informed Consent Investing in Locally Controlled Forestry Forests & Poverty Reduction and Rural Livelihoods Intensively Managed Planted Forests Illegal Logging and Forest Governance Forests and Biodiversity Conservation Forest Certification

TFD’s Process TFD Operates under the Chatham House Rule “Participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed". Ground Rules Use mobiles and computers during breaks No video Pictures OK Use Name Tents

Purpose of TFDs “Scoping” Small group of invited participants are asked to share their experience and “weigh-in” on TFDs ability to positively address challenges; Intended to be an initial foray into a challenging, forest related issue; Listen, learn and share broad range of knowledge and experience; Not driving toward solutions…yet. Focus on key questions and opportunities for progress.

Understanding Deforestation-Free “In the newest iteration of the global struggle to reduce deforestation, private sector actors have begun announcing commitments to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains…Although these commitments have been heralded as ground-breaking,…varied definitions, starting dates, implementation methodologies, and systems for verifying progress make it difficult to know how significant a role they will play in stemming forest loss.”

Origin of the UDF Dialogue Learnings from 4Fs, FPIC and REDD+ Initiatives Steering Committee identification as potential fracture line High profile commitments by Consumer Goods Forum companies, TFA 2020 targets and the New York Declaration Potential of new initiatives such as HCS (High Carbon Stock) Approach

Objectives of this Dialogue Explore commonly held views on what is meant by deforestation-free; Identify risks and opportunities associated with the implementation of the deforestation-free concept; Establish specific and practical ways forward on key issues, and ensure preparedness to pursue these issues.
