VISION LAUNCH Moving to action – nurturing the vision Welcome!!

Re-capping – Horizons Program

What have we been learning about the dynamics at play inside our community…. FOR EXAMPLE ONLY We are weak at encouraging new leaders to step forward. Poverty etc We have strong traditional organizations – which are the ‘backbone’ of our community. We have strong community pride; but are not very inclusive of new people and ideas. We are not very self reliant and don’t look to the long term future. Summary – community assessment at Visioning Rally xxx date

Things we have to celebrate in our community…. FOR EXAMPLE xxxx xxx. xxxxx Summary – from Horizons conversations

Moving into action May 2009 – April 2010 Specialist support (coaching and resources) supplied by U of I and NWAF After that – we are on our own!! Need to make good use of the next 10 months; while we have support and momentum.

Action Teams - Framework We have some existing action teams; We have identified some new action areas (at the visioning rally) – new teams need to form; Some will be ‘big picture; some will be specific project focused; Action teams are all connected together to work collectively on fulfilling on the vision; Initially coordinated by the Horizons Steering committee

Collective Goals and Targets VISION Supported by: Northwest Area Foundation University of Idaho Local Educational Institutions Government / Business Partnership Team aa Team aa Team aa Team aa Team aa Team aa Existing and New Action Teams ACTION TEAMS – fulfilling on the vision Coordinated by Steering Committee

Action Teams – Key Principles Aim to build the community and economy from within approach – but; draw on best available outside expertise. Our competitors are not each other – or our neighboring communities Collaboration and co-operation across teams will create synergies and new opportunities Local people (who know what they need) take control of the community and economic development agenda – ‘power to the people’

Role of Action Teams Focus on action area – provide leadership for the community in that area; Build new networks within the community – include all stakeholders; Identify and remove barriers and impediments; Create projects that build a stronger more vibrant future for the community – connected to the vision.

What the community will expect….. Action and Results! Action Teams will set goals and targets for impact; and will measure progress towards the overarching vision. Footnote: Significant results will take time. Some results will occur quickly; others will take 2-3 years or more Success will require the participation of many sectors of the community – don’t just leave it to the Action Teams!

Action Teams - Mode of operation Conduct your meetings and work in a professional and team approach – there will be co-chairs for each team. Look for cross team opportunities (operate collaboratively) Aim to produce both short and long-term results – be outcome orientated Explore the action area and draw on outside expertise to bring new thinking to the community – especially for the ‘big-picture’ new action areas Bring in new people and ideas from across the community Be bold; be visionary; take a risk!

Suggested work plan – by July 31, 2009 Identify what is the issue / need we are tackling? Who else do we need to get on the team? Who else or what existing projects can we partner with? What extra information /ideas /skills do we need to have? – what barriers might we meet? What short term goals do we want to accomplish by April 30, 2010? – what 2-3 year goals do we want to set? What impact do we want to have, and how will we measure the impact?

Jobs for today Go and meet in Action Teams Review work plan until July 31, 2009 Identify extra skills needed on team: who to invite; who will invite them, and by when (include a ‘wildcard’) Set meeting schedule – (include strategic brainstorming session if necessary); create contact lists etc Be ready for co-chairs to report back in 60 minutes.

Break into Action Teams Choose which team you want to join from the list of action areas / projects You have 60 minutes for the team meeting – go!!

Report Back 5 minutes report by co-chairs on: –team members and gaps –meeting schedule –initial thoughts / reactions to task ahead

Next Steps Action Team regroup (all together) –Xxx Aug /Sept Meeting with Co-chairs and Steering Committee –Xxx (suggest monthly) THANK YOU!!!
