RIVERSIDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Chemawa Middle School Promotion Participation Criteria

Why is this important to me? Both 7 th and 8 th graders have specific requirements that must be met in order to participate in the promotion activities at the end of their 8 th grade year. If you don’t meet these requirements, you don’t get to participate in any end of the year activities which include: 8 th grade field trip, 8 th grade dance, yearbook signing party, and the promotion ceremony.

What are the requirements for the Promotion Ceremony? 7 th grade & 8 th grade students:  Pass a minimum of 20 classes out of the possible 24 semester classes attempted over two years. New 8 th grade students:  Pass a minimum of 10 classes out of the possible 12 semester classes. *You must pass 83% or your classes with a D- or better during your time in middle school.

What does that mean? If you have been here for 7 th and 8 th grade, you can only have a total of 4 Fs by the end of 8 th grade and still be allowed to participate in the promotion ceremony. So, if you fail Math and ELA in one semester, and then Math, Science, and PE in another semester, you don’t participate in promotion.

But…what if I earn several Fs during the 1 st semester? You can remain eligible by passing the failed class with a C or better the following semester.

Monitor Yourself Meetings with Counselors Check your grades every time 3 week progress reports are handed out. Be sure to do any and all make up work before the deadline. Make a plan to raise your grades as soon as possible. Counselors will meet with students who have multiple Fs to create an individualized promotion plan. Parents will be notified as well. How will this be monitored?

Requirements for Participation in 8 th Grade Events A 2.0 GPA by the end of 3 rd Quarter  This is calculated in 8 th grade  Includes 1 st – 3 rd Quarter grades No more than:  5 days of suspension by the activity date  10 referrals by the activity date  10 unexcused absences by the activity date  15 tardies by the activity date (See page 7 in your planner.)

Questions? Now what? Ask your teacher for help and to clarify any questions you may have. Check your grades to be sure you are meeting the promotion ceremony criteria. Use Haiku and Student Dashboard to track missing assignments and grades. Attend Morning Tutoring when needed. Follow the school rules. Get to class on time.
