Soccer Notes Soccer like games have been played throughout history in many different cultures and civilizations. Soccer is known as Football in the world outside of USA. Modern soccer rules were established in England in the 1800’s. A regulation soccer team consists of 11 players. A regulation soccer game is 90 minutes long, divided into two 45 minute halves.

Soccer Positions Forwards: Offensive players, play towards the front, main responsibility is to score goals. Mid Fielders: Offensive and defensive players, play in the middle of the field, Main responsibility is to defend and attack. Defenders: Defensive players, play towards the back, main responsibility is to defend. Goal Keeper: Defensive Player, only player that can use his/her hands, main responsibility is to block shots on goal.

Soccer Terms Formations: listed from defenders to forwards (exclude goal keeper) Ex.: 4-4-2, 4-3-3. Hand Ball: When a player touches the ball with his hand or arm. Results in a free kick for the opposing team. Off sides: When an offensive player is passed the ball and there are less than two defensive players between him and the goal. (Offensive half only).

Soccer Terms Fouls: making contact with an opponent to gain an advantage, Kick off: Used to start a game or resume play at the beginning of the half or after a goal is scored. Throw in: Used to resume play after the ball goes out of bounds at the side line. Free kick: resumes play after a foul has been called.

Soccer Terms Penalty Kick: free kick on goal only defended by the goal keeper. Only called when a foul or hand ball by a defensive player occurs in the penalty box. Goal kick: resumes play after an offensive player kicks the ball out of bounds over the goal line. Kicked from the goal box. Corner kick: resumes play after a defensive player kicks the ball out of bounds over the goal line. Kicked from the corner area.

Soccer Skills: Dribbling Contact the ball with sides of feet. Keep the ball close. Run. Keep eyes up. Control ball with both feet.

Soccer Skills: Passing Step next to ball. Aim plant foot at target. Slightly bend knee and rotate hips. Strike ball with inside of foot. Pass reaches target.

Soccer Skills: Throw-In Two hands on the ball (form “W”). Ball starts behind head. Step and Drag toe while releasing ball. Both feet stay on the ground. Throw-in reaches target.
