Soccer Drill Practice Cards This PowerPoint contains 16 soccer drill practice cards. Once printed and cut out, each 3X5 card contains detailed instructions on one side and a diagram of the drill on the other side

Instructions To create the first set of 4 cards: 1.Print slide 3 (front side). 2.Put the printed paper (printed side up) back into the feeder tray on the printer. 3.Print slide 4 (back side). 4.Cut along the dotted lines on the cards. To create the second set of 4 cards, follow the same steps described above but print slide 5 (front side) and then slide 6 (back side). To create the third set of 4 cards, follow the same steps described above but print slide 7 (front side) and then slide 8 (back side). To create the fourth set of 4 cards, follow the same steps described above but print slide 9 (front side) and then slide 10 (back side). NOTE: Make sure “slides” is selected when printing.

Explain: purpose is to avoid getting beat by defender and attack ball when opponent loses control Practice defensive stance: 5’ away, knees bent, slide feet quickly, stand with 1 foot in front and 1 in back Drill 1: Defender can’t touch the ball. Offense dribbles down field. Defender stays with opponent without touching the ball but staying with the opponent. Drill 2: No goals. Offense dribbles down field with light pressure from defender. Defender can touch the ball but plays easy. Drill 3: Offense dribbles down field and tries to score on goal. Full pressure from defender who can steal the ball. A FRONT SIDE B C D Through the River and Around the Tree SKILLS: Changing pace while running, fast touches, head up while dribbling Colored poles are placed 50 yards apart; a dense “river” of cones is placed in the middle Two teams, each at opposite ends The goal is to start at your “tree”(eg, blue pole), race through the “river” of cones, around the same color on the opposite end, and back to the pole where you started If you hit a cone in the “river” you have to go back and start over through the river The team that has all players back at their pole wins 1V1: Offense Transitions to Defense SKILLS: 1V1, dribbling, moves around defender, defense, conditioning Played on a short field with goals at each end Played with 4-6 players per field Offensive person (O1) tries to score in goal at opposite end of field Defender (D1) covers O1 to prevent a score If D1 steals ball, she tries to score in the same goal Person who scores (usually O1) now plays defense and covers new O2 players entering field adjacent to goal scored on Play is continuous Defensive Containment – 1V1 SKILLS: Defensive stance, containing opponent, controlling ball on offense 2V1 Keep-Away – Light Pressure SKILLS: Moves around a defender, passing, feeling pressure 2 players pass ball to each other with defender in middle Defender applies only light pressure Defender can only jog straight at ball Person receiving then cuts away from defender to pass ball to partner

B BACK SIDE A D C pole cones O2 O3 O1 D1 The person trying to score (O) then becomes defender for person entering field Defender (D) leaves field and comes back in after player at opposite end tries to score in nearby goal cut pass DRILL 1DRILL 2DRILL 3 O OO D D D goal defender

A FRONT SIDE B C D 3V3 (with Goalie): “X” Passes Before Shooting SKILLS: Passing, move to get open, defense, conditioning 3 offensive players and 2 defensive players plus a goalie. Coach tells offense they must pass “X” (3 – 10) times before taking the shot without the defense hearing this number. Offense must pass X times, then they can shoot Play starts at midfield. After score, offense and defense switch, but 1 offensive person is in goal, and previous goalie come out to join offense Coach tells new offensive team to pass “X” times before shooting. This can be done with 2 fields and 2 sets of teams, and it can be done with 2V2. Target Practice with Sprints and Toe Taps SKILLS: Passing accuracy, dribbling, conditioning Players line up with ball Each player has a cone located 10 to 20 feet away Coach yells “Shoot!” and each player tries to pass their ball to knock over their cone If the shot misses, player must run to retrieve ball and come back to starting line to take another shot Once 1st player knock down cones, coach blows whistle and all other players have to run with ball around a pole and back Last two players to return to starting cone must do 10 toe-taps 3V1 Fast Throw Ins SKILLS: Fast throw-ins, finding open person, receiving ball, scoring Purpose is to learn to throw in ball quickly down field Start by reviewing throw-in technique: ball behind head, arms throw evenly forward, feet on ground Call out positions: defense, midfield, forward. Players run out on field to positions marked by cones Coach dribbles field around defenders and kicks it out of bounds Appropriate player (usually defender) must run quickly to pick up ball and throw it downfield to forward (if open) or to midfielder Coach covers 1 of the players to force throw to open player Person receiving ball dribbles down field to score in goal Triangle Keep Away – Receivers Move to Receive SKILLS: Moving to get open, passing 3 players on offense in triangle with 1 defender in middle Offense plays keep-away DRILL 1: Slow Start off in slow motion. When person receives ball, let defense jog up then freeze Receivers must run to open space to receive ball Use sticks to illustrate angle change as defender approaches (angle to other players must get wider as defender approaches) DRILL 2: Fast Continue at full speed Receivers must move immediately to get open quickly

B BACK SIDE A D C poles cones Offense passes “X” times before shooting teammate moves to passing lane to get open DRILL 1: SLOWDRILL 2: FAST 1. Coach dribbles up field and kicks ball out. 2. Defender quickly runs off the field to throw bal in to open player. pass defender receiver passes to teammate defense runs around cone pass offense

A FRONT SIDE B C D Partner Passing: Don’t Knock Over the Cones SKILLS: Accurate passing, receiving Teams of two pass the ball back and forth Partners are 20’ apart with two tall cones between them spaced 4’ apart Each partner passes the ball between the cones to the partner The partner receives the ball and passes it back If a cone is knocked down, the person passing must quickly run up and put the cone back up If the person passes outside the cone, she must run up and touch one of the cones, then run back The first pair to reach 20 passes wins SKILLS: Passing, receiving balls while moving, conditioning Cutting Race SKILLS: dribbling under control, light touches, cutting the ball, keeping head up Create 2 “cutting” fields next to each other Each field contains 9 gates Two players race to go through all 9 gates and make it to the end of the field. The first to cross the line wins Coach begins the race by yelling “go” Each player dribble through gate, then cuts the ball sideways toward the other gate The player dribbles through all the gates and finishes once he or she dribbles through the last gate Trapezoid – Receive, Pass, and Move to Other Cone SKILLS: Passing, receiving, passing and moving 4 cones set up in trapezoid shape: red cones A & B, blue cones A & B 2 players line up behind each cone with 1 ball used for passing Once player receives ball, he passes to a player on the opposite side, then runs to a different cone For example, player at blue cone B receives ball from red A. She passes to red B, then runs to red A Player at red B receives ball, passes to red A, and then runs to red B Keep the ball moving and encourage fast and accurate passing Trapezoid – One-touch Pass & Around Cone 4 cones set up in trapezoid shape 1 player stands in front of each cone Person receiving the ball passes to either of the two opposite players Passes should alternate: pass to person on the left, then pass to the person the right, etc After each pass, person runs around cone behind them and back in front to receive again

B BACK SIDE A D C Pass then run around cone and back Pass to either player receive pass passes to other player runs to opposite cone after passing 10’ A B A B pass

A FRONT SIDE B C D Race Around the Square SKILLS: Dribbling under control, cutting the ball, keeping head up while dribbling Create a square with cones. Each side of the square is about 10’ 2 players are at opposite corners of the square Each player has is his own ball In Round 1, both players dribble counterclockwise around square and try to tag opponent with ball or try to pass the opponent The first player to do so wins the race In Round 2, players race clockwise Dribble through the End Zone SKILLS: Dribbling, fakes, passing, defending 2 teams of any size (2v2, 3v3, 4v4) End zones are placed at either end of the field Defenders can’t go into the end zone they are defending Object is to dribble the ball (under control) into the opponents end zone Players must make minimum number of passes before entering end zone (or each team member must touch ball once) Once ball is dribbled into end zone, ball stays in end zone First team to get 3 balls in opponent’s end zone wins Cross the Line in 10 Seconds SKILLS: Defending 1v1, moving around a defender, conditioning 1 gate (20’ apart) in the middle of the field is defended by a player 2 Offensive players start at cones placed 40’ from gate When coach blows the whistle, the first offensive player has 10 seconds to try to dribble the ball through the gate while the defender tries to keep ball out of the gate When coach blows whistle, player with ball must return to starting cone and the other player immediately tries to dribble through the same gate from the opposite direction Play continues for 5 minutes with the same defender After 5 minutes, players switch places 1V1 – Bring the Ball Home SKILLS: Conditioning, dribbling, shielding, dribbling with head up Set up multiple boxes (~20’ X 30’) with 2 players per box Ball is placed on cone in center of field Players start at opposite ends at their “home” part of the field On “go,” players race to ball trying to take it to their side of the field Player tries to keep ball in their “home” area After 60 seconds, coach blows whistle to stop play Winner stays in their box, opponent moves to another box to take on another player

B BACK SIDE A D C When coach yells “go,” players dribble around square and try to “catch” opponent 30’ 20’ home defender 40’ 20’ Offense player 1 tries to dribble through gate Offense player 2 BLUE END ZONE RED END ZONE pass
