TIME-OUTS  Requested at table by coach or assistant coach  Ignore from floor or bench  No conditional requests allowed  Table informs officials at first opportunity  Can withdraw request before official is informed

TIME-OUTS  Granted during play stoppage, dead ball, clock stopped (foul or violation)  After field goal to team scored upon  To either team if the last free throw is successful.  To either team after a free throw is followed by a throw in from mid-court.

TIME-OUTS  No timeouts between free throws  Double requests given to first coach unless other team scored upon  If you hear coach asking, wait for table to buzz & make request

TIME-OUTS  2 in first half  3 in second half  1 per extra period  No carry over (use ‘em or lose ‘em)  Signal: form T w index finger  Positions: Far end of FT line, facing table

TIME-OUTS  All are full 60 sec. (no shortening)  Warning horn at 50 sec.  Subs ok after warning horn  Teams must stay at bench area until warning horn.

TIME-OUTS IN LAST 2 MINUTES OF THE 4 th QUARTER or OVERTIME:  If offense requests a timeout from the backcourt. (i.e. after a made fg, ft or defensive violation), throw-in is opposite the table at the centre line  Player straddles line

TIME-OUTS IN LAST 2 MINUTES OF THE 4 th QUARTER or OVERTIME:  The ensuing throw in may be thrown into the backcourt  No 24 sec. reset but a new backcourt 8 sec. count begins

SHOT CLOCK  24 sec. to release for shot  Must subsequently hit rim  Shot clock starts when team has control of live ball  Does not start on a tip – game clock may run while 24 sec. clock does not

SHOT CLOCK: NO RESET  AP Arrow to team in control  Air ball followed by simultaneous possession, AP to offense  Offensive injury

SHOT CLOCK: RESET  Defensive injury  Kicked or fisted ball  Official whistle in error  Shot hits rim, offense regains control  Turnover controlled by defense

SHOT CLOCK: RESET continued…  Ball goes in (score)  Technical stoppage - no adv  Foul – except cancellation of equal penalties & same team gets throw-in  SIGNAL: Rotate hand, index finger extended

VIOLATIONS: SHOT CLOCK  Shot not released prior to 24. sec. horn  Ball released in time but does not hit ring  Horn doesn’t stop play, only the official’s whistle does  SIGNAL: Fingers of one hand touch shoulder

SHOT CLOCK: EXCEPTION Shot is released before horn and does not hit ring, but opponents gain IMMEDIATE & CLEAR CONTROL of ball – disregard horn and allow play to continue

UNSPORTSMANLIKE FOUL A player CONTACT foul which, in the judgement of the official, is not a legitimate attempt to directly play the ball within the spirit and intent of the rules SIGNAL: Grasp wrist upward

UNSPORTSMANLIKE FOUL: PENALTY Free throws shot by player who was fouled (throw-in at centre or jump ball to begin first period) 2 if player not in act of shooting 2 or 3 if in act & ball did not go in 1 additional if basket made

DISQUALIFYING FOUL Any FLAGRANTLY UNSPORTSMANLIKE action of a player, substitute, excluded player, coach, assistant or team follower SIGNAL: Clenched fists raised

DISQUALIFYING FOUL continued… Player also DQ’ed with 2 UNSPORTSMANLIKE fouls Coach DQ’ed with 2 ‘C’ Technicals, 3 ‘B’ Technicals or combination of any 3

DISQUALIFYING FOUL: PENALTY Offender must go to dressing room or leave the building (unless player is a minor) Free throws shot by player fouled, or any opponent if non- contact

DISQUALIFYING FOUL: PENALTY continues… Free throws followed by throw-in at centre or jump ball to begin first period 2 if player not in act of shooting 2 or 3 if in act & ball did not go in 1 additional if basket made

FOULS - TECHNICAL FOULS – PLAYERS  Non-contact fouls of a behavioural nature – live or dead ball  2 shots plus possession at centre line (any opponent may shoot)  All technicals by “players” are charged as such & are also team fouls  SIGNAL: Form T, palm showing

FOULS - TECHNICAL FOULS – COACHES  All technicals on coaches, assistants, substitutes and team followers are charged to the head coach  Technicals on the coach, etc. do not count as team fouls

FOULS - TECHNICAL FOULS – COACHES  Actions that merit technicals are classified as follows:  C on the head coach - 2 of these = ejection  B on the bench - 3 of these or 1 C and 2 B’s = ejection

PLAYER FOULING OUT  30 sec. to replace  Team charged with a timeout if they take longer than 30 sec.  If team has no timeouts then a B technical is charged

FOULS ON OPPOSING TEAMS  Fouls of equal gravity are cancelled regardless of the order in which they occur

FOULS ON OPPOSING TEAMS  Play 1: A1 is fouled in the act of shooting, followed by a Technical on coach A and a Technical on coach B  Cancel the two coach T’s and shoot the two FT’s for A1.

FOULS ON OPPOSING TEAMS  Play 2. A1 fouled in the act of shooting, FG is good. A1 commits an unsportsmanlike foul on B1 and then a technical.  A1 1 FT, B1 2 shots, any B player 2 shots and possession.

FOULS ON OPPOSING TEAMS  Play 3: During a live ball A1 makes inappropriate comments towards B2. At the same time B2 pushes A1.  This is not a double foul but the penalties are of equal gravity. Team A retains possession. Throw in at spot of foul

QUIZ #2: Who invented the shot clock, and how did he decide to use 24 sec. as the limit? The owner of the Syracuse NBA team invented the shot clock. He calculated this by taking the number of seconds in an NBA game and dividing it by the average number of team possessions (120).
