Apuntes de marzo The Subjunctive in Adjective Clauses ¿Conoces a alguien que hable francés? Do you know anybody who speaks French? Sí, conozco a alguien que habla francés. Yes, I know someone who speaks French.

If the antecedent of an adjective clause is indefinite (it can’t be specifically identified), the verb in the clause is conjugated in the subjunctive. If the antecedent is definite (it can be specifically identified), the indicative is used in the adjective clause. The antecedent is a noun that immediately precedes QUE.

Vivo en una casa que no tiene vista. ( I live in a house that doesn’t have a view.) ↑ ↑ definite antecedent indicative (this is a specific house) Quiero vivir en una casa que tenga vista.( I want to live in a house that has a view.) ↑ ↑ indefinite antecedent subjunctive (the house is unspecified)
