Introduction Slavery and Civil Rights are two very important parts of our history. I believe that all students should be aware of the hard times of America. This unit will cover the underground railroad, civil rights movement, important African Americans, and Abraham Lincoln. The unit will consist of 9 days of instruction and activities and 1 day of testing. At the end of the unit the class as a whole will develop their own web page including writings and pictures that the students have created for slavery and civil rights. 1

Content Day 1: The Underground Railroad Introduction to the underground railroad. Video and books. Day 2: The Underground Railroad Cont. Discussion of the importance of the underground railroad. The students will look at books and pictures. Day 3: Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglass Students will do research and find out why Tubman and Douglass played an important role in the underground railroad. Day 4: The Civil Rights Movement The students will be introduced to the Civil Rights movement and when and where it all took place. Day 5: The Civil Rights Cont. The students will talk about the civil rights movement for children. 2

Content Continued Day 6: Abraham Lincoln Discuss Lincoln’s importance toward the freedom of slaves. Day 7: African Americans Who Made a Difference Talk about the other famous African Americans and how they became famous Day 8: Martin Luther King Jr. Discuss his importance in the equality of all people. Day 9: Selected Play Presentations Throughout the unit the students will put together 2 or 3 selected plays for the underground railroad and other parts of this unit. Day 10: Evaluation The students will be given a 10 question test to evaluate the knowledge obtained during this unit. 3

Objectives 5 1.The students will understand the tragedy and triumph of slavery. 2.They will learn about the important individuals in the event of the Underground Railroad. 3.The students will obtain factual information about the Civil Rights movement and how it affected them today. 4.The students will be able to identify what Abraham Lincoln did for slavery. 5.The students will develop an understanding of prejudice and how it is in the world today. 6.The students will broaden their knowledge of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Day 1 Introduction: The teacher will first ask the students if they know anything about the underground railroad. The students will watch a video and discuss what they saw. Development: They will develop an understanding of how the underground railroad came about and how it operated. Culminating Activities: The students will written in their journals how the video made them feel and what they think they would have done if they were in that situation. 6

Day 2 Introduction: Review the video they had seen the previous day. Look at the books that accompany the video. The students will also look at the book called Underground Man. Development: The students will be able to study the underground railroad at a slower pace by looking at the books which will enable them to take in more information. Culminating Activities: The students will be given a scenario and they will have to tell the teacher how the problem would have been handled in the time of slavery. The students will do this activity in groups of three. Given a map they will look at the routes of the underground railroad. 7

Day 3 Introduction: The students will be introduced to two important people, Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglass. They will search the internet given specific websites for information on the two conductors of the underground railroad. Development: The students will develop an understanding of how important it was for these two people to help out in tough times. Culminating Activities: The students will be asked to write a short paragraph or summary of each character and how they helped the slaves. 8

Day 4 Introduction: The students will be shown the video The Civil Rights Movement: Witness to History. They will then discuss the video. Development: The students will develop an understanding of what the Civil Rights Movement was and how it came about and who it was that took control. Culminating Activities: The students will create a classroom Civil Bill of Rights that the teacher will have to approve. 9

Day 5 Introduction: The students will get to look at an album called Civil Rights Movement for kids. The class will then discuss what events during the Civil Rights Movement still is in affect today. Development: The students will be able to get a closer look at what the Civil Rights Movement was all about. Culminating Activities: The students will create a story in groups of 3 or 4 about how they would have felt if they were in this situation and what was happening around them.( Journal style) The students will be asked to draw up a poster on what they feel the Civil Rights Movement has changed for us today. 10

Day 6 Introduction: The students will be asked if they know why Abraham Lincoln is important when talking about slavery. The students will be responsible for reading a short story about Abraham Lincoln. After they read the story they are to develop a short summary of why he was important. Development: The students will develop a view of how Lincoln was an important individual and what he did for slavery. Culminating Activities: The students will write a letter to Lincoln to tell them how they feel about his actions and ask him questions about what he did and why he did it. 11

Day 7 Introduction: The students will be read to by the teacher Amazing African American History. Throughout this book they will discover some famous African Americans and how they became famous. Development: The students will obtain a greater knowledge of famous African Americans. Culminating Activities: The students will research on character they choose from this book. They will each be given an Encyclopedia of Black America and they will orally demonstrate to the class what they found on each individual chosen. 12

Day 8 Introduction: The students will be introduced to Martin Luther King through the video called Our Friend Martin. As a class we will discuss what he did and how he did it. Development: The students will develop a greater understanding of what Martin did for the rights of black Americans and other Americans as well. Culminating Activities: The students will be given an opportunity to create their own “ I have a dream” speech and present it to the class. 13

Day 9 Introduction: The students will be given an opportunity throughout the whole unit beginning from day one to think about a character that they would like to be. The teacher then selects plays on the 6 th and 7 th days and has the students take on the roles of their character. Development: The students will broaden their development and understanding of African American history and its importance in today’s society. Culminating Activities:The students will present each of their plays to the entire building in the auditorium. 14
