1 Black History Month By: Kayla Coiner and Stephanie Polce

2 Emancipation Proclamation A decree by Abraham Lincoln that set some African Americans free of slavery. It happened on September 22, 1868.

3 13 th Amendment to the Constitution It prohibited slavery in the United States. It happened on December 6, 1865.

4 14 th Amendment of the Constitution The 14 th grants citizenship to former slaves (men). This has happened 1868

5 Jim Crow Laws The laws said that African Americans had to be separated, but were treated equally to whites. This was from the years 1876 to 1965.

6 Formation of the NAACP The NAACP stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It formed because of a race riot.

7 Little Rock Nine The little rock nine was students who couldn’t get into school because of them being African American.

8 Rosa Parks Rosa was sitting on a bus, and a white person wanted the seat that Rosa had, but she refused to move to the back of the bus for him.

9 Jesse Owens He won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics. He was a track and field athlete.

10 Jackie Robinson Jackie was the 1 st African American to play in baseball’s major leagues. He broke the color barrier. His first game was on March 17, 1946.

11 Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. was known for fighting for African American rights. He was a Reverend. He didn’t believe in violence.

12 Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” Speech It was given in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. He stated that he had a dream that someday all blacks would be equal to whites.

13 Harriet Tubman She was an Underground Railroad conductor. She was a former slave. She helped hundreds of slaves to get free.
