Today’s Learning Goal We will be able to better understand the concept of “part-time” identity and how his environment, the reservation, affected his identity Progression of Learning  We will reflect on yesterday’s reading to identify evidence Alexie is using to communicate his message.  We will identify our own part-time identities

Journal Reflection As I check off your notes from the first reading assignment, answer the following questions in your journal. 1. What were some of the challenges Junior faces in this first part of the book? 2. With which of Junior’s experiences can you identify? 3. With which can you not? 4. What are some self-reliant characteristics Junior exhibits? 5. In what ways can society/community oppress us? In what ways can it lift us up?

Class discussion  By drawing cartoons, Junior feels safe. He draws “because I want to talk to the world. And I want the world to pay attention to me.” How do Junior’s cartoons show his understanding of the ways that racism has deeply impacted his and his family’s lives?

Part-Time…Me Think about your own identity, what are two identities or personalities you spilt your time between? Neatly draw a full- page stick figure in the middle of the page and a dotted line down the middle and use words to describe each identity on its respective side.
