Welcome to the Huge Manatees Today is Wednesday, December 11, 2013 and you will need: Notebook Writing tool Class Folder You received blank address sheets to your parents last Friday. Please return them as soon as possible. Last day to turn in the Powerful Paragraph assignment is Friday. Does anyone have an Annotate/Analyze/Evaluate paper to turn in today? It’s due tomorrow. Start up is a S,T,W,C

Start Up SEETHINKWONDERCONNECT

Daily Learning Target “We can discuss whaling controversy issues in a seminar” Progression of Learning “I understand the difference between discussion and debate” “We can discuss our seminar questions silently” “We can discuss our seminar questions verbally”

“I understand the difference between discussion and debate” Debate Discussion You are making an argument You are showing that other people are wrong Your goal is to win and for the other side to lose You are asking a question You are investigating different opinions Your goal is to deepen the class’ knowledge

Seminar Questions If the Makah were hunting a different animal, would people still have protested? Can the Makah hunt for cultural reasons if they don’t use traditional methods? Are the Makah “using” their culture to get special privileges? Does the fact that the Makah were mistreated in the past give them the right to whale in the present? Please answer one of these questions in your journal first.

“We can discuss our seminar questions silently” A Chalk Talk is… A silent discussion Like texting (but no text abbreviations) Remember Absolutely no talking Write back and forth to each other, don’t just write one thing and leave Draw arrows to show lines of communication Read and write thoughtfully

“We can discuss our seminar questions verbally” If the Makah were hunting a different animal, would people still have protested? Can the Makah hunt for cultural reasons if they don’t use traditional methods? Are the Makah “using” their culture to get special privileges? Does the fact that the Makah were mistreated in the past give them the right to whale in the present?

Fist to Five “We can discuss whaling controversy issues in a seminar” Reflection Question 1. Explain one thing you learned, realized, or thought about today 2. How did you do in the discussion? How could you improve? Homework Write a one sentence response to this question: “What is your perspective on the Whaling Controversy?”

Notes Dynamite! Didn’t do the levels of questions, that was just left over from earlier. Had students write an answer to one question before the chalk talk and then write down one thing from the chalk talk they wanted to bring up before starting the discussion

“I can generate thoughtful questions about the editorial” Levels of Questions 1 st Level Question: When was the Treaty of Neah Bay signed? A 1 st level question has only one right answer that is found in the text.

2 nd Level Question: What “side” does the author find most important? A 2 nd level question can have more than one correct answer that is found in the text.

3 rd Level Questions: If the Makah were hunting a different type of animal, do you think protestors would still be so upset? A 3 rd level question applies information from the text to a situation outside of the text. It is very difficult to give an incorrect answer to a 3 rd level question.
