A 12-month kindergarten transition guide for families and their children enrolled at People for People Early Childhood Development Center

 Transitioning to kindergarten is a significant developmental milestone for your child. An effective kindergarten transition plan will empower your child to be successful as they begin their public school education.

PFP ECDC kindergarten transitioning goals are to:  Equip children with the much needed skills to be successful in kindergarten and beyond  Increase the number of families who pre-register for kindergarten  Educate families about kindergarten expectations and schedules  Assist children with achieving a smooth transition into kindergarten by working with receiving schools to plan visits and other activities to make the transitioning easier.

Start today!  This guide offers guidance from September to August  Learn valuable ideas  Learn fun activities  Learn tips for families  Learn about community events that can assist you with the transitioning process  Learn about great books that prepare your child for kindergarten  Learn what your child should know  Learn about summer educational materials that is available for purchase

An activities calendar for parents and their children.  Attend Back to School Night and PFP ECDC October’s Parent Meeting. Learn about kindergarten Readiness!  Complete the School District’s of Philadelphia’s Kindergarten Checklist for your child.  Assist your child in improving in those areas that need strengthening

December Through February 1. Attend PFP ECDC February Parent Meeting. The School District of Philadelphia, PFP Charter and nearby charter school representatives will be in attendance to provide information, provide brochures and offer school applications Parents will be informed of all registration deadlines and lottery drawing dates by school representatives at that time. 3. Read several books per month that focus on transitioning to kindergarten. See suggested book list to follow.

1. Attend kindergarten orientation 2. Parents should make an appointment for your child to visit their new school 3. Read stories to your child about going to kindergarten 4. Have children write a letter to his/her new teacher 5. Inform your new school of existing IEPs or other areas of concerns so that they can better support your child in his new classroom March through May

 Read kindergarten readiness books to your child – Stimulate their excitement!  Complete summer-fun workbooks to reinforce/strengthen kindergarten readiness skills.  Attend Ready, Set Kindergarten offered by The Please Touch Museum, the Free Library of Philadelphia, The School District of Philadelphia and LEARN from 6-7:30 June 20 th, 26th, 28 th. Contact Betsy Vassallo at  Attend the Please Touch Museum Kindergarten Mixer on Saturday, August :30-7:30 p.m.  Attend the School District of Philadelphia Annual Block Party  Attend People for People Early Childhood Development Center Annual Carnival.
