Third Grade Curriculum Night

Welcome! Welcome families and students! Please make sure to take a packet and sign in before taking your seats!

Beginning Third Grade Third Grade is an incredibly exciting year! We will be learning a lot of new material, having lots of fun, but also start Beginning of Grade and End of Grade Testing!

How can you help as parents/guardians/families? ❏ You know your child best. We invite you to share information with us about your child and your hopes for him or her in the classroom! As his or her teachers, there are certain things we do not get to see in the classroom, and we hope we can work together! ❏ As the year progresses, our intent is to help every child meet his or her full potential. We will be working hard, but enjoying our time doing so!

Read to Achieve Read to Achieve (RTA) legislation requires that every 3rd grader reaches proficiency in Reading by the end of 3rd grade. There are several indicators of proficiency, such as the BOG, EOG, MClass Level, and the RTA Portfolio. We will share additional information as it becomes pertinent to your child or as it becomes available.

Grading Scale There is a new grading scale being used this year. The grades are: A- 90-100 B- 80-89 C- 70-79 D- 60-69

Reading Reading every day will be vital to your child’s success this school year. Please be sure he or she reads at least 20 minutes every night and you sign their reading log. Why read 20 minutes at home? Retrieved from http://www.okaloosaschools.com/bluewater/sites/ okaloosaschools.com.bluewater/files/users/kristin astepan/read%2020%20min%20at%20home.png

How Can I Help at Home? There are three great ways you can help at home. 1.Vocabulary- Building vocabulary is key for readers. The best way to build vocabulary is READING! You can discuss words with your child he or she may not know. It is also great for you to read books to your child that he or she may not be able to read on his or her own. If you do not have time to sit down and read a whole story or book, ask your child three new words he or she learned at school today. Vocabulary review will help to keep information fresh. 2.Fluency- Fluency is reading smoothly and with expression. Re-reading stories can help build fluency (and comprehension). As fluency improves, it shows that students are better able to decode words and are now at the stage where they can understand what they are reading, as opposed to focusing on sounding out the words.

3. Comprehension- Comprehension is understanding what is read. An easy way to help at home is ask students the Five W’s- who, what, when, where, and why, ask them to tell you main ideas and supporting details, describe the characters, and/or retell the story in chronological order. These are three important aspects of reading we will be covering in third grade, but are something you as parents are able to do over dinner every night or for five minutes before bed. It will not take long but will help your child to know you are invested in their learning and willing to help them!

Resources to Help with Math at Home ❏ Please have multiplication flash cards at home. These are important to practice daily once students start learning multiplication. You can find them at the Dollar Store or dollar section of Target. If your family cannot get cards, please let me know! ❏ There are many simple ways to practice math at home. Have your child skip count items around the house, add up the dinner bill, tell you what time it is, count the money in your pocket, etc. ❏ Included in your packet is a list of online math resources your child can use. If you do not have Internet access, I have also included a list of ways to practice math at home.

Questions or Concerns Please ask any lingering questions or concerns you may have. You can also feel free to e-mail or send a note to your child’s teacher at any point throughout the year.

Thank You! Thank you for attending. We look forward to working with you and your child this year!
