Your Health and Wellness Chapter 1

Lesson 1  Health is the state of total well-being. Although heredity and environment are health factors, your personal health is greatly influenced by choices you make.

3 Elements of Health Physical Mental/emotional Social This is dynamic What are the 7 Lifestyle factors? What does Health Literacy mean?

7 Lifestyle factors  7-8 hrs of sleep  Eat nutritious foods  No smoking/drugs  Eat breakfast  Exercise 3-5 days a week for a minimum of 30 min  No alcohol  Maintain a healthy weight (body composition)

Lesson 2  Heredity and environment, which you have little or no control, are influential to your health.  Social environment – peer pressure can be challenging  Cultural environment – the language your family speaks, food they prefer, traditions, religion, etc.  Physical environment – are there parks? Is it clean? Air quality? Crime?

 Behavior is the most important factor because you control your own behavior!

Lesson 3  Accepting responsibility for your own health and for the health of others is a positive step toward wellness. A first step is to heighten your awareness of risk factors in your life. A second step is to examine current behaviors and values and to make any necessary changes to reduce risk.

Positive Factors Positive Role Models Positive Values Abstinence Responsible teens, who value their health, abstain from sexual activity before marriage and from other high-risk behaviors such as tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.
