Lesson 2 There are 3 main influences on your health: Heredity Behavior Environment Physical Social Cultural

19 Heredity All the traits and properties that are passed along biologically from both parents to child. Hair color Eye color Height Body type Facial features Body size

20 Behavior Unlike heredity and environment, you can control behavior. You have a choice as to what you choose to do. You can reduce your chances by acting in positive ways such as not participating in risky behaviors. Risky behaviors can include smoking, drinking, speeding and following an unhealthy diet.

21 Do you want to raise your children in this environment?
Physical Environment Physical environment is the environment in which you live. Ask yourself this. How is your environment? What would you change? Do you want to raise your children in this environment? Are you safe?

22 Social Environment Social environment includes your family and other people with whom you come in daily contact. Is this a loving environment? Is this a healthy situation for you? Is it a supportive environment? Peers – people the same age who share a similar range of interest

23 What are some of your family traditions?
Cultural Environment Culture – collective beliefs, customs and behaviors of a group These are all effected by culture: The food you eat The language you speak The religion you practice The traditions you follow What are some of your family traditions?

24 Lesson 3 Taking Charge of Your Health
Risk Factors – actions or behaviors that represent a potential health threat The most prominent risk factors among teens include behaviors that contribute to unintentional and intentional injuries, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual behaviors, unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity.

25 What are the accumulated consequences of these actions?
Cumulative Risks These are risks that one takes over and over again. The effects of these habits accumulate over time, leading to serious health consequences. Examples include an individual who repeatedly gets sun burned and a frequent smoker or drinker. What are the accumulated consequences of these actions?

26 Positive Factors Positive Role Models: these are your peers, or people around you that you look up to. Role models inspire you to work harder and to look forward to the future. They also aid in your decision making process. Positive Values: Your values are beliefs and standards of conduct that you find important. Values include character traits such as honesty, integrity, courage, loyalty and hard work.

27 Abstinence and Your Health
Abstinence is voluntarily choosing not to do something. Valuing your health is very important: Abstaining from sexual activity before marriage and from other high-risk behaviors, such as using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs is a type of health value.
