The ACDA Convention ● Founded in 1959, the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) is a nonprofit music-education organization whose central purpose is to promote excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, research, and teaching. In addition, ACDA strives through arts advocacy to elevate choral music's position in American society ● ACDA membership consists of approximately 18,000 choral directors who represent more than one million singers across the United States ● 2007 conference held in Miami, Florida – 5 days and 4 nights

Our Children’s Voices…

…Will Be Heard by Thousands ● 5,000 choir directors attend with a total of approximately 10,000 attendees ● 286 choirs applied to perform at the conference ● 51 choirs were selected to perform ● HISD’s Parker Elementary was the ONLY elementary school in the nation chosen to perform ● Parker’s Advanced Choir is the first elementary school to perform at the convention in over ten years

About our Children ● Parker Elementary School is an HISD Public School with 800 students ● Parker is a magnet school with a focus on music instruction ● 47% of Parker’s student body are economically disadvantaged - Parker is a Title 1 School (20% are gifted and talented students) ● Representative of the city of Houston, the student body at Parker is ethnically diverse: –34% African American –31% Hispanic –31% White –5% Asian ● 650 of the students participate in music programs ● 75 children are members of the advanced choir

The Impact ● Children will experience being leaders and ambassadors representing the city, the district and the school at an international event — They will show the national and international choir community what can be accomplished in a public school — The experience will boost their confidence in performances and will also contribute to their understanding that focused efforts yield success ● They will improve their musicianship by hearing upper level choirs and will be inspired to continue their studies ● This fundraising project is teaching them about setting goals and working together in a community to better themselves and their peers ● Exposure: — Many of these children have never traveled outside of Houston — They will apply the skills that they have learned in their studies of chorus — The children will go on several educational tours in addition to the convention

Funding Notes: Children and chaperones will pay $200 each Children and their families will raise their portion of money through a school wide garage sale, product sales, and working at Reliant Stadium for Aramark non-profit fundraising program.
