RESPIRATION AND FERMENTATION NOTES OBJECTIVE: TO DESCRIBE RESPIRATION AND FERMENTATION

Getting Energy from Food 1. How do we change food into usable energy? ANSWERS: Respiration and Fermentation

Cellular Respiration 2. What happens during cellular respiration? 3. How is the energy is stored? ANSWER: Food is broken down and energy is released. ANSWER: ATP molecules

Cellular Respiration 4. Where does cellular respiration take place in eukaryotic cells? 5 What must be present for cellular respiration to take place? 4. Mitochondria 5. OXYGEN AND SUGAR (food)

Reactants of respiration = oxygen and sugar Products of respiration = carbon dioxide, water, ATP

Formula of Respiration + + Glucose Carbon dioxide + Oxygen water Energy (ATP)

Respiration ATP H2O CO2 O2 C6H12O6 water Carbon Dioxide oxygen glucose energy

Anaerobic Respiration 1.What is anaerobic respiration? 2. What does “anaerobic” mean? ANSWER: When energy still needs to be made, but there is no oxygen ANSWER: Without oxygen

Anaerobic Respiration 3. Where does anaerobic respiration take place? Does it create the same amount of ATP? There are 2 types of anaerobic respiration: what are they? ANSWER: in cytoplasm ANSWER: no, less ATP ANSWER: Alcoholic Lactic acid

Alcoholic Fermentation 6. What type of organism’s do alcoholic fermentation? What is the formula? 8. What do we use this process for? ANSWER: yeast ANSWER: Beer and bread Glucose alcohol + CO2 + ATP

Lactic Acid Fermentation 9. What type of organism’s do lactic acid fermentation? 10. What is the formula? 11. What do we use this process for? ANSWER: bacteria, yeast, animals ANSWER: Wine, pickles, cheese, yogurt Glucose lactic acid + ATP

Lactic Acid Fermentation 12. Did you ever have sore muscles? 13. Why do you get sore muscles? ANSWER: This happens when your cells don’t have enough oxygen present for cellular respiration then fermentation takes place. ANSWER: lactic acid gives you sore muscles!

Why would fermentation be helpful? If your body couldn’t get oxygen fast enough, it can still make a little energy. If a bacteria is living in an environment with no oxygen, it can still survive.

Word Definition Picture Making energy (ATP) from sugar and oxygen Cellular Respiration

Word Definition Picture Energy a cell can use! ATP

Word Definition Picture Making a little energy WITHOUT using oxygen - makes alcohol and lactic acid Anaerobic respiration

Word Definition Picture Creates beer and bread, used by yeast glucose creates alcohol and carbon dioxide Alcoholic fermentation

Word Definition Picture Creates wine, cheese, yogurt and pickles, used by yeast, bacteria and animals glucose creates lactic acid and ATP Lactic Acid fermentation

Word Definition Picture Waste product of fermentation: makes muscles sore Lactic acid

Sum It Up Respiration and Fermentation both release energy form food. Respiration needs oxygen. Fermentation does not need oxygen. Fermentation makes VERY LITTLE ATP, so it’s not as efficient as respiration.
