1. Fermentation
When cells do not have enough oxygen for respiration, they use a process called fermentation!

2. Yeast Cells Yeast are one celled organisms
They break down sugar into bread dough (you may have used them in the silver packets that look like this

3. Yeast rolls They produce alcohol and carbon dioxide wastes
The CO2 is the gas that makes the bread rise before you bake it
The alcohol is lost as you bake the bread

4. Muscles Cells
Your muscle cells use fermentation to change the simple molecules into lactic acid while releasing energy
Fermentation begins in the cytoplasm.
As the glucose molecules are broken down, energy is released

6. BUT the simple molecules from the breakdown of glucose do not move into the mitochondria
Instead, more chemical reactions occur right in the cytoplasm!
These reactions release some energy BUT produce wastes!

7. Depending on the type of cell- it changes to lactic acid or carbon dioxide
When you have lactic acid present in your muscles- you feel sore
