1 Cellular Respiration NC Goal 2.05

2 Why do we eat?

3 Cellular respiration Cellular Respiration: the process by which mitochondria break down food molecules to produce ATP (energy).

4 Cellular respiration Cellular Respiration: the process by which mitochondria break down food molecules to produce ATP (energy). Mitochondria: Organelle where respiration happens.

5 Cellular respiration There are two types:
_________________________: Uses oxygen _________________________: Does NOT use oxygen.

6 Cellular respiration There are two types:
Aerobic respiration: Uses oxygen Anaerobic respiration: Does NOT use oxygen.

7 C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy)
Cellular respiration C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy) What goes in: What comes out:

8 C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy)
Cellular respiration C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy) What goes in: Glucose C6H12O6 Oxygen gas O2 What comes out:

9 C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy)
Cellular respiration C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy) What goes in: Glucose C6H12O6 Oxygen gas O2 What comes out: CO2 H2O ATP (energy)

10 C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy)
Cellular respiration Aerobic respiration Uses oxygen Formula for aerobic cellular respiration: Happens in the mitochondria. C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + ATP (energy)

11 Cellular respiration Do plants do respiration?

12 Cellular respiration Do plants do respiration? YES!!!!
Just having food inside doesn’t give you energy. Breaking the bonds in the food (breaking the food down) is what releases the energy!

13 Cellular respiration Do plants do respiration? YES!!!!
Just having food inside doesn’t give you energy. Breaking the bonds in the food (breaking the food down) is what releases the energy! Plants use photosynthesis to make sugars out of water, CO2, and sunlight. But a plant cell needs to break down the sugars to make ATP.

14 Fermentation Fermentation: the process of breaking down food to produce energy WITHOUT the presence of oxygen. Two types: Lactic acid fermentation Alcoholic fermentation
