Anaerobic and Aerobic Respiration

What is the difference between aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration?

Aerobic Respiration Release of energy with oxygen Example: Cellular Respiration Lots of energy produced in the mitochondria

Anaerobic Respiration Release of energy without oxygen Example: Fermentation Small amount of energy produced in the cytoplasm

What is fermentation? Fermentation is an energy releasing process in cells that does not require oxygen. Releases less energy than cellular respiration. Occurs in the cytoplasm.

Two types of Fermentation 1.Alcoholic Fermentation – produces alcohol, carbon dioxide, and a small amount of energy; occurs in yeast and other single celled organisms 2.Lactic Acid Fermentation – produces lactic acid and energy; occurs in muscle cells
