Lamentations This book is written in the form of five poems which mourn the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 B.C. They are in alphabetical form, each verse beginning with a new letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

They flow from Jeremiah’s great love for the city of Jerusalem and the great mourning of its people. It also contains a message of trust in God and the need for repentance. It is used by Christians during Holy Week to recall the experience of Calvary and by Jews in remembrance of the events of 587 B.C.
