Biology EOC Class #1 Room 221 Mrs. Gleb

Class One Plan! Student Self Assessment Overview of the class Introduction to the EOC Writing on the EOC Vocabulary Taking notes and keeping a notebook Practice Test (if there is time!)

Self Assessment Please review the Biological Concept self assessment and grade your own understanding of each concept. + means that you completely understand the concept and could teach it to a classmate √ means that you understand the concept - means that you do not understand the concept Write your name on the completed Self Assessment and hand it in to me

Class Plan Class 2: Ecology & Chemistry of Life / Writing: Constraints Class 3: Cells & Photosynthesis / Writing: Conclusions Class 4: DNA, Protein & Genetics / Writing: Field Study Procedures Class 5: Practice EOC / Writing: Controlled Experiment Procedure Class 6: Practice EOC / Writing: Unintended Consequences Class 7: Final Review, test taking strategies & Review

Intro to the EOC Question Types Multiple Choice : 31-34 per test (1 point per question) Completion :1-4 per test (1 point per question) Short Answer: 5 per test (2 points per question)

Writing on the EOC You MUST write something on these sections! These questions are where the most students lose points – do not skip them Carefully review each writing question and underline the components that your answer should have

Types of Short Answer / Writing Questions Constraints & Criteria Describe 2 constraints on the situation provided (other than cost) Describe how each constraint is a limitation on the solution

Types of Short Answer / Writing Questions Conclusions Answer the question Include supporting data from the IV & DV table Explain how the data support your conclusion Provide an explanation for the trend in the data

Types of Short Answer / Writing Questions Field Study Procedure Record environmental conditions Identify 2 controlled variables Identify manipulated variable (3 conditions) Identify responding variable Say RECORD data (not “measure” data) Make your final step “repeat steps (list steps) two more times and average the data”

Types of Short Answer / Writing Questions Controlled Experiment Procedure Give logical steps to do the experiment Identify 2 controlled variables Identify manipulated variable (3 conditions) Identify responding variable Identify how often measurements should be taken and recorded. Say “measure and record” Make your final step “repeat steps (list steps) two more times and average the data”

Types of Short Answer / Writing Questions Unintended Consequences Describe 2 unintended consequences of the solution Describe how each unintended consequences could affect a component of the system / ecosystem

Vocabulary Please review the vocabulary list and highlight any words/terms that you do not know the definition of Once you have highlighted your words, pick 10 of them to look up and define using the Biology books at the front of the classroom Add your defined words to your Vocab List

Tips for taking notes Don’t write down everything that you read or hear. Be alert and attentive to the main points.  Concentrate on the “meat” of the subjects and forget the “trimmings.” Notes should consist of key words, or very short sentences. Take accurate notes.  You should usually use your own words, but try not to change the meaning. Think a minute about your material before you start making notes. Don’t take notes just to be taking notes! Take notes that will be of real value to you when you look over them later.

Tips for taking notes Have a uniform system of punctuation and abbreviation that will make sense to you. Use a skeleton outline and show importance by indenting.  Leave white space for later additions. Omit descriptions and full explanations. Keep your notes short and to the point. Do not worry about missing a point. Leave space and try to pick up the material you miss at a later date, Don’t keep notes on oddly shaped pieces of paper.  Keep notes in order and in one place. Shortly after making your notes, go back and rework (not recopy!) your notes by adding extra points, spelling out unclear items, etc.  Remember, we forget quickly. Budget time for this vital step just as you do for the class itself. Review your notes periodically. This is the only way to achieve lasting memory

EOC Notes & Keeping a Notebook Set time aside each week to review your notes and do some sample questions. Keep your notebook clean and tidy. If you have questions on how your notebook should be organized, check the sample notebook at my desk If you need a notebook, let me know! I can find you one 

Practice Test Please work through the practice test and answer the questions that you know If you think you might know, try guessing – but write ? on the question so I know it was a guess
