Warm Up Exercise:

BEING PROACTIVE!

* Forces you to listen carefully * Test you understanding of the material * For reviewing, provide a gauge to what is important * Personal notes are easier to remember than text * Writing down important points helps you remember before you study the material formally.

* Teachers usually give clues to what is important to take down * Material written on the blackboard, proxy, or PowerPoint * Repetition * Emphasis * Word signals * Summaries at end of class * Reviews given at the beginning of class

* Suggestions: * Make your notes brief * use phrase instead of sentence; word instead of phrase * use abbreviations and symbols, but be consistent. * Use your own words EXCEPT: * Formulas, definitions & specific facts

* Use an outline or numbering system * Indentation helps you distinguish major from minor points * If you miss a statement, write down a key word, skip a few spaces, and get the information later. * Date your notes!!! * Number the pages

* Learning to make notes effectively will help you to improve your study and work habits and to remember important information. * Just because you understand information in class means you will remember information later. Write it down!

* Don’t write down everything you read or head (listen for main points) * Notes should consist of key words or very short sentences * Take accurate notes * Use your own words but don’t change the meaning * If you quote directly, quote correctly; make note of who said it

* Omit description and full explanations * Condense your material so you can grasp it rapidly * Don’t worry about missing a point * Don’t keep notes on oddly shaped pieces of paper. Keep notes in binder – in order! * Review your notes NIGHTLY… this is the only way to achieve lasting memory

* If you don’t understand a concept…ASK * When a question is asked in class… * See if you can answer in your mind * If not is the information in your notes * If it is not, write the information down! * Read current notes nightly until you are tested.
