Pipe Supports and Hangers

What is the task? What document describes it? Do I understand it? What is the worst thing that can happen and how can I prevent it? What else can go wrong? What safety and/or radiation protection considerations? Is my training, and are my qualifications up-to-date?

What is the task I am going to perform. What document describes it What is the task I am going to perform? What document describes it? Do I understand it? The task is to receive training on the use of the sites hanger installation specifications. The hanger installation specifications are 13-PN-204 (Nuclear Installations) and 13-PN-205 (Balance of plant). Today we will be looking at 13-PN-205 which is similar to 13-PN-204. This presentation will provide an insight on how to use the Hanger installation specifications more effective.

What is the worst thing that can happen and how can I prevent it? The worst things that could happen is that I do not pay attention and do not receive the material presented.

What else could go wrong? Not using the work mechs, procedures and piping/hanger installation specifications correctly will result in hanger installations that do not meet design requirements. This can lead to costly rework.

What safety and/or radiation protection considerations? The training setting today will not require the use of PPE and does not have any radiation protection considerations.

Is my training and are my qualifications up-to-date? The taking of this course with successful passing of the CBT Test will help you to complete prerequisites for future SWMS Work Assignment Areas.

Course /Lesson Terminal Objective Using 13-PN-205, participants will identify requirements for the installation of pipe supports, hangers and piping system struts. Participants are required to score 80% on a written exam.

Pipe Support Installation Specifications Pipe supports are designed to transmit loads from a pressure retaining barrier of the piping to a load carrying structure

Pipe Support Installation Specifications The design and location of pipe supports shall be the responsibility of Engineering All design details will be shown on drawings, including miscellaneous steel when required

Pipe Support Installation Specifications Installation of supports shall be in accordance with the design drawings, applicable codes and/or standards, as well as 13-PN-204 or 13-PN-205

Pipe Support Installation Specifications The pipe support location critical dimension is used to locate the support on the pipe system

Pipe Support Installation Specifications The pipe support location critical dimension shall be indicated on the location plan of the pipe support design drawing or on a sectional view of a vertical run of pipe; and will be from an elbow, tee, flange, etc., to the support's location.

Pipe Support Installation Specifications If a dimension is not provided, the critical dimension shall be the reference dimensions from the building columns shown on the location plan of the pipe support design drawing, or for vertical run pipe, the centerline elevation of the component detail.

Pipe Support Installation Permitted Deviations Deviations are permitted provided that the function of the support is not affected, and the required clearance for thermal growth is maintained.

Pipe Support Installation Permitted Deviations Deviations and tolerances for sizes, lengths, and position of miscellaneous steel angles, channels, I beams, tube steel, wide flanges, and plates shall be in accordance with 13-PN-204 or 13-PN-205.

Pipe Support Installation Permitted Deviations Though the specifications allow for deviations, for consistency on these deviations a team leader or the planner shall be contacted for the proper interpretation/application of the specifications.

Runs of Pipe  2-1/2” Free of Obstructions Support location (as shown by the support's critical dimension) may deviate: ±2 inches transversally ±12 inches axially

Runs of Pipe  2-1/2” Free of Obstructions Miscellaneous steel members with field welded end connections may be repositioned up to: ±2 inches vertically ±2 inches horizontally

Runs of Pipe  2” Free of Obstructions Support location (as shown by the support's critical dimension) may deviate: ±4 inches transversally ±9 inches axially (except when the support location is within ±12" of valves, flanges, or any other concentrated load)

Runs of Pipe  2” Free of Obstructions Miscellaneous steel members with field welded end connections may be repositioned up to: ±4 inches vertically ±4 inches horizontally

Sway Struts Shall be installed such that they are within ±five degrees (5) of the design angle when the pipe is at its design operating temperature and pressure

Spring Hangers May deviate a maximum of five percent (5%) from the design cold load setting

Variable Spring Or Constant Spring Supports May deviate from the vertical ±4 between the beam attachment load bolt/pin and the load stud of the pipe clamp when the pipe is at its design operating temperature and pressure

Pipe Strap and Restraint Clearances Clearance between pipe wall (or pipe attachment) and structures shall be as follows:

Pipe Strap and Restraint Clearances Where 1/16" clearance is specified at one side and no clearance is specified at the opposite side in the restrained direction, the 1/16" clearance may be inspected from 0" (free to slide) to 1/8" maximum clearance.

Where 1/16" clearance is specified at one side and no clearance is specified at the opposite side in the restrained direction, the 1/16" clearance may be inspected from 0" (free to slide) to 1/8" maximum clearance.

Pipe Strap and Restraint Clearances Where 1/16" clearance is specified at each opposite side, the inspection may be from 0" (free to slide) on one side to 1/16" minimum and 1/8" maximum total for both sides.

Where 1/16" clearance is specified at each opposite side, the inspection may be from 0" (free to slide) on one side to 1/16" minimum and 1/8" maximum total for both sides.

Pipe Strap and Restraint Clearances For all other cases, the minimum inspection clearance shall not be less than the design pipe move-ment in the direction of the minimum clearance plus additional clearance for thermal radial growth.

U-Bolt Clearances U-bolt clearances for guides may be from 0" (free to slide) to 1/8" maximum

U-Bolt Clearances Clearances for 1" dia. plastic coated U-bolt may be from 0" (free to slide) to 1/4” maximum.

Pipe Strap, Restraint and U-Bolt Clearance Inspection and Verification Inspection and verification of 0” (free to slide) clearance between pipe wall and miscellaneous steel supports, restraint straps, welded pipe attachments, or U-bolts, the inspection method may be one of the following:

Pipe Strap, Restraint and U-Bolt Clearance Inspection and Verification feeler gauge measure move the pipe by hand see visible light

Pipe Strap, Restraint and U-Bolt Critical Attributes 1# Support identification 2# Configuration and location, including clearances 3# Material per design 4# Concrete anchors installed

Pipe Strap, Restraint and U-Bolt Critical Attributes 5# Grout Complete 6# Fasteners torqued 7# Welding complete
