1 SAFE WORK INSTRUCTIONS
Title of Subject : Feeder Last Reviewed Date: October 2015 SAFE WORK INSTRUCTIONS The following safe work instructions is NOT INTENDED to replace hands on training requirements of the code of federal regulations. The intent is to provide an overview of known potential safety hazards associated with equipment operation. Hands on training with an experienced operator on each specific model must be conducted. The trainee can not proceed onto production until they are determined ready to proceed by the supervisor of the training. Before any operation or maintenance procedure is performed with or on this equipment, it is important that personnel have a complete understanding of the location and functions of all controls and indicators, as well as, the location and use of all emergency shutdown controls and procedures. Steps for Initial SWI Training: Prepare – Review the SWI. Present – Quick Card at the machine with experienced operator. Tryout – Person runs the machine with supervision. Follow up – Competency points are verified by supervisor and is signed by the trainee to complete the training. Title: Feeder SAFE WORK INSTRUCTIONS KEY POINTS SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Pre-Operational Checks : Examine roof and rib conditions where work is to be performed. Check for proper identification tag, examine cable and restraining clamp. Overall condition of feeder. Check all switches and levers. Check equipment for fire suppression system (if applicable) Check that all guards are in place located in hazardous locations of feeder. Test the emergency stops and all panic switches to ensure proper operation. Do not go beyond supported top. Ensure power is off while examining cable. Cable, breaker and receptacle must have matching id tags. Restraining clamp at load center and on machine. Remove combustible accumulations All levers shall be centering and all switches in the Off position. Guards provide protection at locations: Pump motors and crusher motor correct deficiencies. If inside of feeder – power must be removed, locked and tagged at power center. Pulling Tailpiece: Inspect chains and connections. Ensure that safety chains are connected prior to pulling the tailpiece. Ensure connections are properly made using manufactured connectors. Chains must be of adequate size and strength. Tramming/Setting Feeder: Sound audible alarm prior to starting or moving to alert others of your intended movement. Utilize proper body positioning. Ensure that wing pins are installed on McClanahan feeders. Ensure that all persons are in the clear prior to starting or moving. Be aware of hand and foot placement during movement of feeder/tailpiece.] The machine is capable of making very “quick” movements. Never allow anyone to stand or walk by the equipment while it is operating. Verify that all persons are in the clear prior to starting the belt. Guards shall be installed from the tailpiece to the belt bedrail to prevent accidental contact with the belt.
