Stafford Borough Landlord’s Forum Welcome

Amanda Knight Community Safety Co-ordinator Anti- Social Behaviour - What can you do to help your community?

What is Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB)? Anti-social behaviour includes things such as:  rowdy, noisy behaviour in otherwise quiet neighbourhoods  night time noise from houses or gardens, especially between pm and 7.00 am  threatening, drunken or 'yobbish' behaviour  vandalism, graffiti and fly-posting  dealing or buying drugs on the street  litter and fly-tipping rubbish  aggressive begging

What is Anti- Social Behaviour (ASB)? Continued…  drinking in the street  setting off fireworks late at night  abandoning cars on the street Anti-social behaviour doesn't just make life unpleasant. It can ruin lives and make whole areas feel unsafe.

Fiona Pilkington and Francesca Hardwick- October 2007  A mother and her disabled daughter died when Ms Pilkington set fire to their car.  Four officers have since faced misconduct charges after “missed opportunities” to stop youths terrorising them.  An inquest heard that six months before her death she had told her family: “I give up!”

Following this case:  Police and councils nationwide reviewed their own policies.  Agencies started working much more closely together in a more joined up way.  Regular multi agency meetings are now held in Stafford Borough to tackle crime and ASB.  This helps to ensure that no opportunities are missed when helping victims like Fiona Pilkington and her daughter.

ASB in Stafford Borough  ASB is still a priority in Stafford Borough, even after significant reductions in the number of incidents.  There has been a 23% reduction in ASB in the last year and 44% reduction over the last 5 years.  Reports of environmental damage including litter or rubbish more than doubled in 2011/12 however.

ASB in Stafford Borough The main types of ASB in the district are:  Rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour (58%)  Neighbour Disputes (19%)

Environmental Damage This type of ASB comes at a huge cost to the tax payer…

What can you do as a landlord in order to help your tenants and the surrounding community? Tenancy agreements could be amended to include an agreement:  To show respect and consideration to neighbours.  To turn music and cinematic equipment down to a reasonable level after 11pm.  To not let dogs or other pets run loose outside of the garden of the property (if applicable).  To keep the property and surrounding spaces clean and tidy.

How to report… Anti Social Behaviour can be reported in a number of ways.  Staffordshire Police’s non emergency telephone number: 101 (Always dial 999 or 112 in an emergency).  Stafford Borough Council for noise nuisances:  Stafford Borough Council for environmental ASB such as littering and fly tipping: or

Any Questions?
