Native American Tribes

Wampanoag Tribe  Originally native to the Massachusetts & Rhode Island  It was Wampanoag people who befriended the pilgrims at Plymouth Rock bringing them corn and turkey for the famous first Thanksgiving.  Unfortunately, the relationship went downhill from there, and disease and British attacks killed most of the Wampanoag people.  The surviving Wampanoag people are still living in New England today.  Homes/Living: Wigwams  Travel/Transportation: Canoes  Way of Life/Occupation: Hunting and fishing  Famous Wampanoag: Squanto – he assisted the pilgrims during the first winter Pictures of the tribe- /regions/region1.html /regions/region1.html

Navajo Tribe  The Navajo people lived in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado  Homes/Living Arrangements: Hogans, traditional earth houses.  Travel/Transportation: walk  Way of Life/Occupation: Farmers and hunters  Huge influence on WWII – Code Talkers (code was never broken)  One of the major groups still living in a territory or reservation today called the Navajo Nation.  The Navajo Nation has its own government, laws, police, and services, just like a small country.

Cherokee Tribe  Tribe lived in the southeastern US  Most Cherokees were forced to move to Oklahoma in the 1800's along the Trail of Tears.  Homes/Living Arrangements: Wattle and daub  Travel/Transportation: canoes  Way of Life/Occupation: hunters and fishermen  Famous Cherokee: Sequoyah - invented a writing system that is still used today for the tribe.  Today the Cherokee Nation is one of the largest; still located in OK.

Sioux or Lakota Tribe  Mainly located in the Dakotas; known as the Great Plains Indians  Homes/Living Arrangements: Teepees  Travel/Transportation: canoes and horses (experts)  Way of Life/Occupation: hunters and warriors  Famous Lakota: Red Cloud – warrior and statesman  success in confrontations with the United States government  Famous Lakota: Sitting Bull - chief and holy man.  United the Lakota tribes in their struggle for survival on the northern plains  Sitting Bull remained defiant toward American military power. Famous Lakota: Crazy Horse – leader who fought against the US army to preserve the traditions and lands of his people.

Pueblo Tribe  Mainly live in New Mexico and Arizona.  Unlike other Native Americans, the Pueblo Tribe were never forced to leave their homeland.  Homes/Living Arrangements: Pueblos made from Adobe (clay and straw baked into hard bricks)  Travel/Transportation: walking and horses  Way of Life/Occupation: hunters

Iroquois Tribe  Mainly lived in the New York area.  Homes/Living Arrangements: Longhouses  Travel/Transportation: canoes  Way of Life/Occupation: hunters and fishermen  Famous Iroquois: Hiawatha – founder of the Iroquois Confederacy and was known for his peacemaking skills.

Cheyenne Tribe  Originally lived in the Great Plains- mainly SD, NE, WY, KS, and CO  The capital of Wyoming is named after the Cheyenne tribe.  Homes/Living Arrangements: Wigwams and Teepees  Travel/Transportation: horses  Way of Life/Occupation: farmers and hunters

Choctaw Tribe  Originally located in MS, AL, FL, and LA  Homes/Living Arrangements: Rivercane Homes ( made of plaster and rivercane walls, with thatched roofs)  Travel/Transportation: canoes  Way of Life/Occupation: fishermen and hunters  Despite losing their homes in the infamous Trail of Tears, the Choctaw Indians gave what they had to help Irish famine victims in the 1800's, and are still admired by Irish people today.

Apache  Located in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas  Homes/Living Arrangements: w ickiups  simple wooden frames covered by a matting of brush and a buffalo- hide tarp  Travel/Transportation: walk and horses  Way of Life/Occupation: farmers and hunters  Famous Apache: Cochise – leader that lead a battle against the US army and became famous for his courage during battles.  Famous Apache: Geronimo – leader and medicine man lead many battles against the US and Mexico to keep them from taking his peoples land. Is well known for his interactions with everyone.

Blackfoot Tribe  Located in Montana and Idaho  Homes/Living Arrangements: Teepees  Travel/Transportation: walk and horses  Way of Life/Occupation: hunters and farmers

Shoshone Tribe  Originally lived in Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming  Homes/Living Arrangements: Teepees  Travel/Transportation: walk and horses  Way of Life/Occupation: hunters and farmers  Famous Shoshone: Sacajawea – helped as an interpreter and guide for the Lewis and Clark Expedition across the newly purchased Louisiana Territory

Seminole Tribe  Located in Florida  Home: chickees -were made of wood and plaster  Way of Life: hunters, fishing, and warriors  Travel/Transportation: canoes  Seminole men usually shaved their heads except for a scalplock
