Event: Columbus Arrives in the New World Page numbers – 49-53 Time Period – 1492-1506 Culture – Taino Contact With - Spanish Summary – Columbus mistakenly calls them Indians; uses them as guides to find gold and Asian people Examples of Intolerance – Gold, pearls, other precious objects Result – The Spanish stole from them, committed violence, and began forcing Native Americans into slavery.

Event: Fall of the Aztecs and Incas Page numbers – 63- 66 Time Period – 1519- 1535 Culture – Aztecs, Incas Contact With – Spanish explorers Summary – Spanish explorers defeat the Aztec and Incan empires. Causes of Intolerance – Gold, religion, land, and customs Results – Native Americans were forced to mine and farm for the Spanish and adapt their customs.

Event: Jamestown Founded Page #s – 87-88 Time Period – 1607- 1630 Culture – Powhatan Contact With – English colonists Summary - Native Americans taught the colonists to farm, but then more colonists came and took more land Examples of Intolerance – Food, land Result – Expanding tobacco plantations result in wars between the colonists and the Powhatan

Event: Pilgrims Found Plymouth Page numbers – 92-95 Time Period – 1620- 1630s Culture – Pawtuxet, Contact With – Pilgrims Summary – Pilgrims took corn due to a shortage, but then they were taught by the NA’s how to farm, hunt, and fish. Examples of Intolerance – Land, food Result – The “Thanksgiving” feast is celebrated, but as more colonists arrive in New England, they continue to take more land

Event: The French and Indian War Page numbers – 146-148 Time Period – 1754-1763 Culture – Huron, Algonquin, Iroquois Contact With – French and British settlers Summary - A war over North American territory takes place, with Native American cultures having to take sides. Examples of Intolerance – furs, land Result – The British win the war, eventually resulting in Native Americans losing more territory and control of their land.

Event: Lewis and Clark Expedition Pg #s – 320-325 Time Period – 1804- 1806 Culture – Mandan, Sioux, Shoshone, Nez Perce, Blackfoot Contact With – American explorers Summary - They were called to survey the Louisiana Territory and study the land and cultures, with help from Sacagawea Examples of Intolerance – Land, political issues Result – Lewis and Clark generally developed a positive relationship with Native Americans

Event: Indian Removal Act Pg #s – 374-377 Time Period – 1830s Culture – Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw Contact With – Citizens of Georgia Summary – Native Americans had signed treaties to keep their land, but white citizens wanted them removed Forms of Intolerance – land, gold Result –Cherokees and other cultures were forced by the government to move to Indian territory. Many died on the journey called “The Trail of Tears.”

Event: Removal in the West Pg #s – 562-564 Time Period – 1830s- 1880s Culture – Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Contact With – American settlers, U.S. Army Summary - Settlers began to find natural resources and take land owned by Native Americans under treaties. Examples of Intolerance – Land, natural resources Result – The Treaty of Fort Laramie was signed to help Native Americans live on reservations, but often not the land they originally lived on.

10. Event: Battle of Little Bighorn Page numbers – 564-565 Time Period – 1876 Culture – Sioux Contact With – United States Army, Summary – Gold was found in South Dakota. To defend their land, the Sioux defeated the army of General Custer Examples of Intolerance – Land, gold Result- The Sioux won a major battle over the American army

Event: Resistance in the Northwest and Southwest Pg #s -565-567 Time Period – 1860s- 1880s Culture –Nez Perce, Navajo, Apache, Shoshone Contact With – American soldiers and settlers Summary - Indians fought back to keep their land and by escaping or fighting Examples of Intolerance- land Results – Many NA’s died in the fighting because of a lack of weapons and food. They were forced back to their reservations.
